Thank you to Skift and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) for hosting an enjoyable and insightful Aviation Forum in Fort Worth on Wednesday. From the excellent speakers, I had a few takeaways: 1. ✈ Airlines are adjusting and optimizing networks to capture post-pandemic demand shifts and drive operational productivity in different ways. Geopolitical risk is the biggest concern for international travel demand. Airline travel has changed the planet by building commerce and connections. 2. 🌎 Sustainability efforts require a multi-prong approach; I was most struck by Steve Hazy's comment about how the industry will replace ~35,000 aircraft in the coming the decade with just two dominant manufacturers that build 600 to 700 aircraft a year. It's a big wake-up, especially when we are reaching existing technological limitations and the belief is in hydrogen for larger, long-haul aircraft that will need to be developed, certified, and manufactured at mass scale. 3. 👩💻 AI and advanced analytics provide significant opportunity but the challenge is achieving a positive ROI by tying business decisions to outcomes and bringing along cultural change, talent, and training. In a recent Skift survey, only 38% of executives said they were getting a positive ROI on AI investments. In a separate survey with Amazon Web Services (AWS), 60% of airlines and airports are investing technology spend on legacy systems in 2023 and 2024 compared to just 24% for hotels. It's difficult to take advantage of new technologies when so much focus and investment remains on are older systems and infrastructure. 4. 🛫 Customer experience is changing for the better - time is precious and the proliferation of mobile and data sharing can reduce friction and stress throughout the journey especially in airport lobbies and create a "living room" experience in-flight. 5. 🚌 In Mexico, there will be ~120 million passengers this year but nearly 3 billion bus trips per year, of which 700 million trips are over 450 kilometers and ripe for flights. High taxes and total journey costs are the limiting factor in the continued shift from bus to air travel. #owtransporation #owaviation #oliverwyman #skiftlive Chiara G.
