I've officially fallen in love with Runway. A lot of companies promise that they can simplify financial modeling, but before Runway I hadn't found a tool that lived up to that hype once I got inside. Offline has a complex model with individual P&Ls and growth models for each city, 10 different cities, a significant difference between cash and accrual revenue, and a wide variance of performance depending on execution of different tests and plans. Last week, I needed to create three different scenarios for performance on a short timeline. I needed to vary levels of staffing and results of tests, and then compare the differences in ARR, cash balance, individual market profitability, cash runway, etc. And I needed to do it in a way that was intuitive and easy to digest for our entire leadership team. In the past, this would have taken me a MINIMUM of a week in Google Sheets. It would have been virtually impossible to tweak the wide variety of inputs that I was able to tweak and to see the cascading effects across so many different performance metrics. With Runway, it took me about a day, and I had an extremely high level of trust and confidence in the scenarios themselves. In Sheets, one miscalculation or non-obvious formula error can completely undermine the entire exercise, and it can be difficult to trace the error(s). I started using Runway in December, and it has not been without issues. They're an early-stage company, and there are still some performance challenges that need to be addressed. But I really buy into the vision of what this company is building, and I encourage anybody who needs a better tool for financial modeling to check them out.

I began my career in investment banking, working over 100 hours a week in Excel, trying to predict the impact of company mergers with just numbers. When I moved to a startup, one of my first projects was launching a new product. I followed my familiar process → Gather data → Build a model → Analyse → Recommend → Execute After 2 weeks, I was finishing up a model and the CEO said, "You aren't going to find the answer in a spreadsheet alone." At first, I was taken aback, even slightly offended at the correction. Now, I know they were spot on. Big decisions – especially in real estate – demand more than just data (and trust me, we have tonnes of it at Kitt).
