The Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine’s recent white paper details the staffing struggles laboratories have been facing since before the COVID-19 pandemic. But there’s room for optimism as the industry pushes for a modernization of the required experience, opening the door for many more people to pursue careers in laboratory science. Troublesome vacancy rates continue to plague the laboratory medicine industry, leading to greater workloads, reduced in-house testing, and longer wait times for patients. A white paper recommends reserving high-complexity testing for staff with MLS credentials, developing alternate career entry points, and highlighting the value of laboratory medicine. Erika Deaton-Mohney MT(ASCP), CPP, coauthor of the white paper, warns that this situation has a negative impact on patient care. Let's work together to address this issue and ensure timely and accurate laboratory results for all patients. #laboratorymedicine #patientcare #healthcare

Editorial article: Highly consolidated QC materials support EFLM Green Lab Initiative Due to the initiative of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM), the issue of sustainability has become a key focus in clinical laboratories. A recent study from Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid, Spain, has shown that using a highly consolidated QC material can have a significant positive impact on lab efficiency and sustainability – without compromising analytical performance. #clinicalqc #clinicallaboratory #medicallaboratory #sustainability #greenlabs #greenlab LGC Clinical Diagnostics https://lnkd.in/ejjP3JWN

Great article in CLN today about properly categorizing lab tests according to true complexity, rather than historical - meaning, if the test is now automated and has very few steps, why on earth is it still categorized as High Complexity? At Accumen we always recommend to our clients that using Medical Laboratory Scientists to the top of their license is essential because MLS's are a scarce commodity that must be cherished. MLS's should not be running waived and moderate complexity manual or automated tests. Create a pipeline to MLS by hiring and training Lab Assistants to do that work, then help them earn their MLS! Use the experts you already have to train the next generation, as MLS schools continue to close. And compensate them for their value as leaders, teachers, and subject matter experts. https://lnkd.in/gPZR_bv5

WISC. DIAGNOSTIC LAB’S ALTERNATIVE STAFF SOLUTIONS College students and recent graduates learn the lab while working toward MLS ASCP certification AMID UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES IN RECRUITING AND RETAINING LAB PROFESSIONALS, Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories (WDL) is using alternative staffing solutions to develop qualified and certified employees to meet its workflow needs. WDL managers and technologists share responsibilities for guiding college student apprentices and recent graduates on their way to certification as laboratory professionals. The WDL team also now reaches out to high schools and more venues to spread the word about the benefits of a career in laboratory science. All the hard work is paying off in a low staff vacancy rate and other achievements by WDL, which was recently named a 2024 Lab of the Year Runner-Up by Medical Lab Observer. “We are making a connection. There are a lot of programs and initiatives we are doing. We don’t have any temporary staff or traveling staff working in the lab. We have been able to develop our own team and average a 4% vacancy rate,” said Mike Baron, WDL’s Executive Director, Clinical Laboratory Operations, in an interview with The Dark Report. A new perspective on maximizing the current MLS workforce.

The sharing is actually about discussing the issue of Human Error in Hospitals. Regarding this, a student conducted a case study on human error in the aspects of analytical laboratory work in hospitals. Analytical laboratory work involves diagnostic activities such as pathology, haematology and microbiology tests. The scope of hospital laboratory services covers specimen handling, blood, urine, throat swab, rectum, vagina and urethra specimen testing, sputum and stool (feces) specimens. The issue of human error in hospital laboratory activities can arise due to various human factors. As a simple framework it can be stated as follows; divided into three phases - human error during the 𝐩𝐫𝐞-𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 phase, 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 and 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥. Pre-analytical errors are usually caused by issues such as unclear communication (communication gaps) between healthcare professionals, improper collection or handling of samples, and inaccurate labelling. Meanwhile, during the analytical phase, errors occur due to equipment failure, or not being calibrated, incorrect test selection, inaccurate pipetting, specimen contamination, and intrinsic aspects such as staff fatigue and workload. Then for the post-analytical phase, errors can occur during transcription or reporting of results. It is directly related to the issue of misinterpreting results received. Therefore, specific human factor interventions need to be tailored to the identified error issues. Engineering and administrative approaches are able to resolve these problems. The effectiveness of interventions depends on the approach taken, so gathering input from relevant laboratory staff is key. They are individuals who interact directly with the laboratory system and work processes. Their views can lead to appropriate, accepted and practical interventions. Congratulations to the student who presented her findings—and hopefully she gained beneficial knowledge which can be applied when she enters career world. #AcademicActivities #HumanError #Hospitals #AnalyticalLaboratory #PreAnalyticalPhase #AnalyticalPhase #PostAnalyticalPhase #PreAnalyticalMistakes #PreAnalyticalErrors #AnalyticalMistakes #AnalyticalErrors #PostAnalyticalMistakes #HumanFactorInterventions #EngineeringApproach #AdministrativeApproach #LabStaff #LabSystem #LabProcesses

HAVE YOU EVER FELT EMBARRASSED WHEN SUBMITTING YOUR SAMPLE FOR LAB DIAGNOSIS? One of my favorite places in the lab is the reception when I am less busy working on the bench. Interacting with patients from time to time is more fun than working on hundreds of samples with different number identifications. The reception is one place where you get to meet and interact with different patients. Here patients submit their samples(blood sample, stool, urine, HVS, Semen, sputum, pleural fluid, etc) For proper documentation and distribution to the various benches. But I can't help but notice the way 90% of the patients are submitting these samples. Some samples are wrapped with a lot of tissue, while some are tied with black nylon. Most times I feel the patients are a bit shy when submitting these samples for examination. Thankfully, as lab scientists, we always try our best to educate patients on the proper collection and delivery of samples to avoid contamination which could lead to a false positive result. ✨ Dear patients, it's understandable if you feel shy submitting your stool, urine, semen, or any other sample you feel a bit embarrassed submitting. Just so you know, It is what we as lab scientists signed up for and we took an oat to work on that sample without any form of discrimination. ✨ As a patient, if you are confused about the process involved in collecting and delivering your sample to the lab, don't be shy to ask questions. The lab professionals are there to answer all your questions. ✨Next time you want to submit your sample, do it more confidently being fully assured that we as medical lab scientists are interested in the above-mentioned samples for proper diagnosis and want you to bounce back to your health as fast as possible. ✨ Now, tomorrow, and forever I am rooting for you. Yours’s in support #ScientistGift #MedicalMicrobiologist #MLS #happyweekend
