As 2023 draws to a close, we invite you to join us in our Advent countdown. Today we present Lynn Chadwick's (1914-2003) 'Two Figures' as the eighth reveal. Chadwick recorded all of his sculptures in thumbnail sketches in ink. These drawings represented the precursors of his drawings in pen and wash. Filled with sepia, the outlines gain solidity and hence sculptural veracity. Chadwick would draw sculptures, once finished, to enable him to reassess them, and thence, perhaps, to take their forms in new directions. 'Two Figures' (1956) parallels the developing series of 'Teddy Boys' and 'Two Dancing Figures', while not quite matching either. Heads are reduced to beaks, ribs strongly defined. Yet is this a pair, or two single figures? Each has four legs, a compositional ploy more often used for composite works to join two dancers as one. The potency of Chadwick’s draughtsmanship is such, however, that a cross-current passes between the two figures, gesturing and posing: dynamic in stance. 'Two Figures' (1956) Ink and pen 30.5 x 22 cm. [51 x 40.5 cm., framed] Signed and dated 'Chadwick 1956', in ink lower right £12,500.00 + ARR For further information or to arrange to view this piece, please email: info@osbornesamuel.com Follow the link to view our December Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eA5y66ai #modbrit #modernbritish #modernbritishart #modernart #modern #chadwick #lynnchadwick #lynnchadwicksculpture #britishart #abstract #figures #ink #drawing #gallery #artcollector #collector

#RomanGlassPortraits The Romans developed a remarkable technique for crafting gold "sandwich" pendants and bowls. In this method, a glass-blower applied gold leaf to the outer surface of a molten glass bubble. The glass could be either colorless or tinted in shades of blue, green, red, or purple. A fine needlepoint was employed to scratch and stipple the gold leaf to create intricate portraits and decorations. Subsequently, the glass-blower would press a second bubble of transparent molten glass against the first, effectively encapsulating the adorned gold leaf between thin layers of glass, forming the characteristic "sandwich." Portrait medallions, produced using this technique, were occasionally designed as ornamental pendants for personal adornment. However, most were affixed to the base of bowls and dishes, serving as commemorative pieces for special events or wedding gifts. As time passed, these portrait disks were carefully removed from the dishes and repurposed as grave markers, akin to the framed photographs frequently found in modern Roman Catholic cemeteries.

I tried a little Stable Diffusion. I wanted to create a couple of medieval character concepts. I did not expect such a result. It blows my mind. It's very easy, and it's like cheating))) #StableDiffusion #DigitalArt #PhotoshopArt #DigitalIllustration #GraphicDesign #ArtisticSkills #CreativeProcess #ArtCommunity #ArtInspiration #ArtisticExpression #VisualArt #ArtGallery #DigitalPainting #ArtisticJourney #ArtisticVision #ArtPromotion #DesignInspiration #ArtPortfolio #ArtisticDevelopment #ArtisticStyle #ArtistsOnInstagram
