President @ Vocana | Where Independent Music Thrives

Spoke to a music industry colleague of mine today. He made a point that I struggle with... He said, just because it's easier to make and distribute your music today doesn't mean you should. I'm on the fence, musicians have to start somewhere. However, I can also see his point. This one got me. #music #business #diy #recording #streaming

There is something to be said about performing live, honing your sound/style, and perfecting your songs (seeing what resonates with an audience) long before you get in a studio, and subsequently, long before you distribute your music.

DIY music distro can be great with the right strategic approach, or can be terrible if you're releasing music in a vacuum. Without some knowledge and strategy to accompany the release, it can be a bit of a "tree falls in the forest" situation. Having a large catalog of released music that performs poorly can hurt optics and limit future opportunities. So, while artists *do* need to start somewhere, it's all about the *how.* :)

I can totally relate to that feeling of being on the fence. With music being so easy to create and share these days, being really self-aware is key. This honesty with yourself will reflect in your music.

It’s never been easier/cheaper to create and release music. But as Jess Kenney Music Growth Consulting, LLC point out the whole audience development/music marketing side is a minefield to build as a DIY artist. Before the advent of digital releases it was more a case of building a following/network in your local scene, this is much harder to do now and relies on social media presence.
