I joined the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) Monday morning for a discussion on global competitiveness and innovation at the 21st International Advisory Council Meeting. Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong led a great session, and the conversation reinforced a notion I’ve written a lot about: The need for strong global linkages in a world that’s dividing.   My McKinsey Global Institute colleagues have found that every region relies on imports for more than 25 percent of at least one good. Last Wednesday, SME Centre Conference 2023 - from Local to Global was held. SMEs expanding overseas was the key theme for this year’s conference. Singapore has a small domestic market and more companies are seeking new markets from day 1, some via the more ‘traditional’ route of physical offices and some, via E-commerce. It was really nice to have the opportunity to moderate a panel of diversed and highly regarded entrepreneurs. Jesher Loi from Ya Kun International Pte Ltd , Alif Adam from Waistlab Richard Koh from M-DAQ Global and Azhar Othman from Enercon Asia Pte Ltd shared candidly about their journey expanding overseas. From different industries and at different phase of growth, they spoke passionately about the importance of understanding the local culture, timing in expansion, ability to pull back when it doesn’t work, having a vision and most of all, a sharp acumen and perseverance when things are not all smooth. Kudos to each of them as I truly enjoyed the session! Singapore’s Temasek has opened a new office in Paris, a year behind schedule, as it seeks to advance its EMEA strategy, which has seen its exposure to the region grow five-fold since 2011, in Singapore dollar terms to S$47 billion or 12% of its portfolio by end-FY2022/23. Really really interesting intro. Here is a post that should support your intro: #IVSC, #RICS, #ANEVAR and #WAVO. I was invited to present my papers on #MarketRent and Market Rent Revisited (1995 and 2004) at first WAVO Conference in 2006 in Singapore. The Romanian presenters, George Badescu and Ion Anghel both presented two extremely interesting papers. They have both held Board Positions on IVSC over the years. This is interesting considering ANEVAR have only been a Valuation / Appraisal Institute since the early 90s so they have come a long long way NB 2006 vs 1993 say! Ion spoke on Intellectual Property; his add on sentence at the end was: "Oh and by the way a Lease Agreement is an Intangible Asset." That was the last piece of the jigsaw I needed in my thinking to link various pieces together in regard to Valuation / Appraisal. I was already deeply involved linking leases & rents to Market Value in the Retail Arena; which is extremely challenging. My papers through and until 2020 including several to those listed above developed my thinking to our Software as a Service product. As it is, we are far far too small to build our SaaS into a business. It really needs an office of circa 10 - 15 people in Australia alone! Our Business Broker is on to this. He has an MBA from UCLA and really has captured what encompasses our Intellectual Property well. I attach his short but useful description of what comprises of our SaaS below. It have been circulated before. Another really important point I want to make (already Published and Copyrighted) is that in 2022 already, I started linking #MicroEconomics points of #Supply and #Demand and #ContractLaw the point of #Offer and #Acceptance (free from #duress #misrepresentation #coercion #unconscionable Conduct to #MarketRent. What our SaaS is doing is linking: Valuation / Appraisal to Micro Economics to Contract Law whereby parties are able to for the first time Test the Veracity of these points. I am really really proud of these achievements including my contribution to IVS 40.1!
