Electric vehicles as power storage units? Current plans call for this new #technology, which holds great potential for the future, to soon be used on a large scale at #frankfurtairport. In preparation for introducing it, Fraport AG is collaborating with Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH and the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences to test bidirectional charging at Germany’s largest aviation hub. The project is also receiving support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the "Elektro-Mobil" program. The process involved hasn’t been standardized yet, but that is about to change. To implement it at Frankfurt Airport, Fraport, its two partners, and the ministry are together investing some nine million euros in the project. Its potential is huge: by the year 2026, Fraport expects to have around 1200 electric vehicles operating at Frankfurt Airport. Together they will comprise a large-capacity, high-performance energy storage network. The Fraport Group’s goal is zero-carbon operation at all of its airports by the year 2045 at the latest. The keystone of its decarbonization strategy is increased use of e-mobility based on a green energy mix. Is rail the key to a zero emission, resilient, integrated transport system in 2050? 🚊 Zero emission transport requires new technology deployment, significant infrastructure investment, integration into the existing system and a change in customer habits. But rail could buy us time. Rail is in the unique position of already being a transport mode capable of moving people and heavy goods using a zero-carbon solution. And rail has other advantages. Automation isn’t new: just look at the Docklands Light Railway. And, as we move towards 2050 wider automation, particularly in signalling elements, will help to increase capacity and reliability and improve safety. Rail is just one of the areas explored in Innovate UK’s updated Transport Vision which looks at what transport will be like in 2050. In a pioneering move towards sustainable aviation, we’ve embarked on a pilot to test hydrogen as an alternative fuel for ground handling operations. This initiative, a collaboration between Stargate - EU Green Deal project partners DHL and VIL Flanders Innovation Cluster for Logistics in collaboration with WaterstofNet marks the first of its kind for Brussels Airport. 🔍 Insights and Innovations: The six-week pilot aims to provide valuable insights into hydrogen’s potential, shaping the future of airport operations. We’re not just testing technology; we’re developing comprehensive training for users, logistics managers, mechanics, fire brigade, and health and safety personnel. 🌐 A Model for the airport: Our pilot serves as a model, offering insights into permit application processes, safety requirements, and operational experiences. 📌 Last week I had the opportunity to take part in a panel related to "overcoming the barriers to Zero Emission Bus deployment" at the European ZEB Conference in the Busworld - Exhibitions 🌍 At The Go-Ahead Group we are committed to reduce our carbon emissions by -75% by 2035. Our zero emission fleet will have more than tripled from January 2023 to the end of 2024. We are working hard to overcome the four main barriers to ZEB deployment: #infrastructure 🚧, #vehicletechnology 🚌, #businesscase 💲 and #greenenergy ⚡️ 🚀 Challenges are significant but with strong partnerships with public authorities, supply chain and investors, we are confident to achieve our target to decarbonise #mobility #NextBillionJourneys
