Setbacks suck. Setbacks are inevitable. Fostering unwavering motivation amidst setbacks is a true leadership art. I’ve not mastered it yet. I’ve made many mistakes. But I’m working on it, and here are some things that are working for me: Transparent Communication: Share setbacks openly, coupled with a clear path forward. Transparency builds trust and ensures everyone is on the same page. Reframe Challenges: Encourage your team to see setbacks as stepping stones, not roadblocks. Each obstacle is a chance to learn and grow. Recognize Efforts: Acknowledge hard work and dedication, even in the face of setbacks. Recognition fuels a sense of value and keeps morale high.  It reinforces the progress being made as we figure out solutions. Flexible Solutions: Collaboratively brainstorm adaptable solutions. I seldom find that a rigid solution succeeds.  Flexible solutions let you innovate your way around obstacles. Personal Growth: Inspire continuous self-improvement. Setbacks are opportunities to enhance skills and develop resilience. Celebrate Small Wins: Break down larger goals into manageable milestones. Celebrating these incremental victories sustains enthusiasm. Lead by Example: Show perseverance and a positive attitude. Your own determination becomes a powerful motivator. Setbacks are temporary. With the right mindset, I believe we can emerge stronger, more determined, and ready to conquer new challenges. Not giving up does not mean you keep making the same mistakes. When we fail, we need to stop, rest and analyse what went wrong and then move forward again with new or enhanced strategy. Just don't give up on the goal.

If you are not sure if you should be doing something you DON'T want to do, then you probably should be doing it. Let me explain. I've found that most people have a decent sense of what good and bad looks like in their job. And usually we also have a reasonable set of ideas on how to improve things. The challenge usually stems around taking action. It is super natural to want to avoid pain and the negative side effects that could come from making a hard decision. But once you realize that that bias exists, it makes you much more aware that if you are considering taking action that will create some pain, it usually means you probably should've already taken that action. The pain associated with change likely prevented you from even considering it deeply until it was past due. This doesn't mean that all good actions have to be painful, but if you think something is a good idea and it will be painful, it is probably a better idea than you are giving it credit for.
