🌊 Excited to share a transformative approach to predict water availability using Global Water Watch storage data! 💧 Our collaborative effort between Delft University of Technology, Deltares, and the 510 - An Initiative of the Netherlands Red Cross has resulted in new insights, showcased in this blog post. Water availability is crucial for societies globally, especially in the face of climate change and increasing water stress. Small to medium-sized reservoirs play a vital role, from providing drinking water to supporting energy production and agriculture. However, prolonged droughts can strain these resources, highlighting the need for accurate and timely water availability predictions. Our focus is on leveraging the power of Global Water Watch, a platform that provides open access to crucial water data, including surface water and soon storage data. By tapping into their extensive dataset and utilizing innovative methodologies, we've developed prediction models that enhance our understanding of water availability dynamics in reservoirs. 🔍 Discovering the Functionalities of Global Water Watch: - Surface water and upcoming storage data available through the GWW API for near real-time insights. - Transformation of surface measurements into storage volumes, enabling better decision-making during dry spells. 🔄 A Step Towards Availability Predictions: - Reconstruction of reservoir bathymetry for volume time series information. - Case study on water availability prediction using multi-linear regression models and SPEI correlation. 📈 The results speak for themselves, demonstrating improved predictive abilities with the incorporation of SPEI in our models. This advancement lays the groundwork for better-informed decisions concerning water storage availability. Ashneel, C&R’s hydrogeological modeller, has recently published another peer-reviewed journal article: https://lnkd.in/gXQDvXER #Groundwater salinity impacts #waterQuality and ecosystem health. Accurate predictive models are crucial for effective management. This study validates a model for forecasting groundwater #salinity using three validation methods and various data-partitioning strategies. Results show the hold-out strategy with 40% data partitioning is most accurate. Different methodologies yield varying results, highlighting their importance in comprehensive model assessment.
