Who's out in the garden today๐ Comment below what you're planning to grow this summer! Did you know, the agricultural practices of the Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands were characterized by a division of labor, with women primarily responsible for planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops in individual hillocks, while men focused on growing tobacco? The women used digging sticks to plant corn seeds in these hillocks, spacing them approximately three feet apart. To maintain the integrity of the hillocks, the women would break up the upper part of the ground to remove weeds and grass, using tools like hardwood digging sticks and hoes made from animal bones and deer hide. Each hillock, typically about two to four feet in diameter and twelve inches high, received four corn seeds in a central hole. As the corn plants grew, beans were planted alongside them to provide necessary nitrogen and support. Vine plants were strategically planted between hillocks to retain moisture, offer shade, and suppress weed growth. The paths between rows of hillocks were diligently kept clear of weeds and grass. This meticulous farming method resulted in an average yield of about twelve ounces of corn per hillock, with exceptional harvests reaching up to twenty bushels per acre. The Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlandsโ sustainable agricultural practices highlight our deep connection to the land and efficient utilization of resources for food production. ๐ฟ๐ฑ Learn more about the agricultural practices of the Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands from our resource guide: https://lnkd.in/ghXcA5j8 Illustration by Bill Powless, Woodland Indian Agriculture, Copyright 1982 by WCC #Indigenous #IndigenousVoices #IndigenousArt #IndigenousEvents #FirstNations #FN #IndigenousKnowledge #IndigenousCulture #BrantOnt #Brantford #BrantEvents #OnHeritage #OntarioHistory #Giving #SixNations #SixNationsEvents #Spring #Planting #Resources

The Burimaria Cluster met recently with 22 women and 15 men in attendance! The main topic addressed was the importance of planting trees in the rainy season. This photo gives a good opportunity to mention ways that goats can be of service to TIST Farmers living a life of subsistence: Natural Weed Warriors: Goats are nature's lawnmowers! When strategically introduced to orchards or tree planting areas, they munch on weeds and grasses, keeping the space around young trees clear for optimal growth. Nutrient Cycling: Goats contribute to nutrient cycling by consuming plant material and then fertilizing the land with their manure. This natural process enriches the soil, providing essential nutrients that benefit both trees and crops. Reduced Fire Risk: In areas prone to wildfires, goats can be employed as a natural fire prevention method. Their grazing helps create firebreaks, reducing the risk of uncontrolled fires that could threaten trees and crops. Sustainable Land Management: Integrating goats into agroforestry systems supports sustainable land management. It's a holistic approach where animals and trees coexist, promoting ecological balance and resilience. Income Generation: Goats can be a source of income for farmers. They provide opportunities for the sale of milk, meat, and other goat-related products, contributing to the economic well-being of subsistence farming families. Pruning Experts: Goats have a knack for nibbling at low-hanging branches. This natural pruning service can be particularly useful in tree orchards, shaping trees for optimal growth and enhancing fruit production. Community Involvement: The presence of goats in farming communities fosters a sense of community. It can lead to cooperative efforts in goat rearing, creating a supportive network among farmers. Thanks for your interest and support! @tistprogram #ouransweristrees #reforestationproject #goatsandtrees #goats #benefitsofgoats

We're excited to share an update about our #reforestation and #agroforestry program in the Butiama Hills, Mara Region project, in collaboration with WeForest ๐ฟ. So far, around 77,000 seedlings have been distributed and planted across 145 households. This puts us well on track to reach our goal of supporting 1600 families by the end of the project. In the Butiama nursery, the seedlings needed for woodlots and agroforestry plots were raised, fostering #sustainablepractices for a #greenerfuture. Before receiving their seedlings, participating farmers underwent comprehensive training, learning how to optimise horizontal and vertical space, crop planting and harvesting techniques, and the benefits of growing trees and crops together to improve soil nutrients. The farmers are now equipped with the knowledge of mixing natural fertilisers on-site and utilising agroforestry to protect crops from pests and diseases. The result? Better yields, a diversity of food throughout the year, and a resilient, #sustainablefarming community. #circularcomputing #sustainableit #circulareconomy

Every country should mandatorily make it high priority, make laws that will punish the sale / resale / storage and use of harmful chemicals, machines that are used for spraying these chemicals. and also the idiotic ideas of farm scrap / straws burning, just to prep for next crop cycle. If lawmakers can't do it, #fireThem instantly, we do not need stupid slow lawmakers sitting idle on taxpaid chairs forever. #DethroneIdiotsNow #Biodiversity is more valuable for life on Earth and definitely important than slow human #dumbpolicymakers.

Meet Bee. Bee loves Dandelions and you can still see Dandelion pollen stuck on her legs. Unfortunately, Bee is dead. She died doing what she loves and what nature intended her to do, pollination. The reason for this is a weed killer, that had been sprayed on the Dandelion that she visited. I still find it weird that humans came up with a way of farming that kills life instead of building it and how people can try to hold onto that system is beyond me. I can not think of anything better to do with my life than dedicating it to the creation of a food system that builds life instead of destroying it. Let's hope we manage that transition while we still have Bees around, we need them. Picture credits go to Chris Hurst AiFireE MCMI.

Kimani Gichuche This is true and vital to the food security of the region. Whilst Solar has a vital role to play in the cold chain, it value and need is far greater in terms of education, health and the role of hatcheries, nurseries and processing. Because the sector and communities have so many needs the focus cannot be on patch solutions. Communities need an holistic and inclusive approach to development and by doing so the communities, become invested, resilient and strong. All solutions should focus on the long term not quick, easy and cheap. The future of Africa is in our hands, it is our responsibility to build for the next generation and theirs for the next, if we fail they fail. Food for Thought.
There has been a decline of wild caught Tilapia in both Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana. Uptake of cage farming in Lake Victoria seems to be a sustainable solution to reduce the stress in the fisheries resources in Lake Victoria. With Adili Solar Hubs Limited entry into Lake Victoria we are keen to explore ways we can promote community uptake of fish cages. The CEC Blue economy Homabay county JOHN AGILI has expressed to us the need of empowering the community especially the women through sustainable aquaculture initiatives to boost Tilapia production in the lake. This plugs in well with the Solar powered cold storage and ice making facilities we are developing for post harvest management. We hope our work in Homabay county drives the fish farmers to revive the fish cages.
