Small, marginal and marginalized farmers can create a more resilient ecosystem by integrating trees into farmland. This restores vital nutrients to the soil and provides much-needed shade and wind protection for crops. Agroforestry empowers these communities by offering a diversified harvest, with fruits and timber alongside their crops. This translates to greater food security and economic opportunity. Let's support the spread of agroforestry as a powerful tool to heal our landscapes and empower our people. When I first got involved with building hydroponic systems about 8 years ago the thought of growing food for animals had never crossed my mind. Fast forward to today, and now we're a few months into taking 1 pound of dry barley seed and turning it into over 6 lbs. of lush and rich barley sprouts every 6-7 days! By the time these plants are done, each tray will have over 60 lbs. of fresh feed for cows, sheep, pigs, or chickens. Why does this matter? Well, only 5% of Alberta's farmland is irrigated. This most recent drought has gripped much of the prairies for the past several years leaving abundant and affordable feed increasingly difficult to find for many ranchers. This has led to a massive downsizing in many herds as farmers struggle against rising input costs. So, we're working on ways to build a cost-efficient and scalable hydroponic design for farmers to access affordable and reliable food for their animals while using less water. Want to see how this works on a larger scale? Be sure to follow me over the coming months as we ramp up a system that will grow over 1200 lbs. of these sprouts every day! #cattlefeed #hydroponics #barley #drought #innovate #supportfarmers

The long-awaited Catchment Rehydration Selection Tool (CReST) was officially launched at the Mulloon Rehydration Conference in May 2024. Focusing on the suitability of infrastructure within watercourses (such as leaky weirs) and riparian zones (such as revegetation), the CReST model highlights the potential agricultural and environmental benefits of these rehydration practices. Initially created for NSW, this tool acts as a blueprint to be rolled out across Australia with funding support. CReST has been developed in partnership with HydroTerra, with valuable input from JB Pacific. ๐ ๐ https://buff.ly/3VeDbdG #landscaperehydration #landscaperestoration #biodiversity #regenerativeagriculture #resilience #ruralaustralia #soilhealth #drought #AusAg #droughtresilience #agriculture #crestool

๐ Read our new blog article "Green Arteries: Reviving Czech landscapes with bio-corridors" ๐ง๐พ Bio-corridors are being planted throughout the Czech Republic as a measure to prevent wind erosion. ๐จ๐ฟ We spoke to Engineer Pavel Okรฉnka of FLORSTYL s.r.o. who shares his insights on the project: ๐ฌ We used TerraCottem in order to reduce our maintenance cost. A project like this would need 10 irrigation rounds. With TerraCottem we reduced it to 6. This allowed us to allocate staff to other planting projects. ๐ฌ Read the full article: ๐ https://lnkd.in/emwJmuSp #Biodiversity #customersupport #drought #droughtstress #NatureJustGotBetter #nourishyoursoil #quality #soilconditioner #soilhealth #soilimprover #sustainability

Risk of severe drought in the Central Highlands The article discusses the severe drought situation in the Central Highlands, specifically in Dak Nong province, where water sources are rapidly declining, leading to crop withering and potential future impacts on hydroelectric projects and agricultural production. The province is currently experiencing a decrease in the water level of many irrigation works, raising concerns about potential drought affecting over 20,000 hectares of industrial crops. The authorities and local residents are urged to take response measures to combat the effects of the drought on agricultural production. Additionally, the article highlights the high risk of forest fires in the Central Highlands and Southern regions due to the prolonged dry weather. #AsiaRisk #NaturalDisasters #Vietnam Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gP6B6mak

Did you know the world loses 12 million hectares of land through desertification and drought every year? This is 23 hectares per minute! This is often caused by unsustainable farming systems and climate change. Many people are going hungry because degraded lands affect agriculture, which is a key source of livelihood and food for many communities. With the help of our member organisations, we're restoring drylands around the world. Head over to our website to learn how www.evergreening.org ๐ณ #GreenUptoCoolDown #EverGreeningtheEarth #GenerationRestoration #Biodiversity #RestoreAfrica #DecadeofAction #ClimateChange #LandRestoration #Environment #Drylands #Desertification #Drought #Farming #Agriculture

Devastating 1000 year floods are happening with increasing frequency, especially here in the Northeast US. Farms make up over half of the US land base. A sizable portion of that is particularly vulnerable to flooding. It's time to make a serious commitment to transitioning our agricultural system to one that is not only more resilient to climate change, but helps address it. "Agriculturally Productive Buffers" (APB) are a form of agroforestry suited to this challenge. Balancing risk and reward, they offer opportunities for economic profit while enhancing landscape diversity and resilience. Vermont is one state caught in the crosshairs of this climate crisis. Recent flooding has re-energized calls there for wetland and riparian zone restoration. The image below from the University of Vermont Center for Sustainable Agriculture illustrates how crops like elderberry can be incorporated into a larger multi-functional, multi-zone adaptive strategy. This article from the Cornell Small Farms program explains a bit more about elderberry as an APB crop: https://lnkd.in/eVXA3mrN FLX Agroforestry Solutions is committed to helping landowners and farmers in and around New York's Finger Lakes region incorporate such crops and approaches into their land management strategies. Working in close collaboration with other providers and funders, we can source, propagate, plant, and/or maintain these and other perennials most suitable for your situation. Drought resilience is achievable only after proper identification and assessment of the specific vulnerabilities and needs of the affected region. This involves understanding the patterns and impacts of drought, monitoring soil moisture levels, evaluating water resources, and identifying at-risk crops and communities. By accurately identifying these factors, targeted strategies such as selecting drought-resistant crop varieties, implementing efficient irrigation systems, and adopting water conservation practices can be developed and applied effectively. This proactive approach ensures that resilience measures are tailored to the unique challenges of each region, leading to more sustainable and robust agricultural practices. #SDG SDG-Challenge Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Drought Assistance Concessional Loans Regional Drought Resilience Planning Program in the Mid West

This yearโs theme on the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought - โUnited for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future' - recognizes the need for all of us to join hands against #LandDegradation. Globally, PVC pipes are increasingly proving instrumental in #WaterExtraction, transportation, and #DripIrrigation in private and public projects to turn drought-affected lands and deserts into lush green #agricultural spaces.
