I went to several art museums this week. The last time I had been in them, which was about 7 years ago, I wanted to be an Artist. 12 year old me saw all those gorgeous paintings and thought "I can do that too." This time, my outlook on the art was different. Instead of it empowering me to become an artist, it inspired me as a designer. So what changed? How did I decide I wanted to do design? The first thing I remember ever wanting to be was a Marine Biologist (3rd grade) 🦈 Second phase, I wanted to be an Artist (6-7th grade) 🎨 Third, Fashion Designer (8th grade) 👗 Fourth, Aerospace Engineer (9-10th grade) 🚀 Shortly after that I came across something called Industrial Design. It was art, engineering, and business all smushed together into a  profession that had the goal of making life for others easier and more beautiful. It was perfect. I wish I could say that from the moment I was born I knew I wanted to be a designer, but I didn't. I didn't think the perfect profession for me existed. Although, if you take what I wanted to be in the past and combine them, I think you'd get something similar to Industrial Design so maybe, in a way, I did always know. Hi everyone! At the end of September, I started my master’s degree in Design for Emergent Futures at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, ELISAVA & Fab Lab Barcelona. The MDEF course focuses on trying to understand, define and design for the changes coming to society in the next 5-10 years. One of the key parts of the course is to build and maintain a website where we reflect on everything we are doing on this course and I thought I’d share it with you all here. What I’ve learned so far from the first semester: 1. The world is constantly in a state of transition, and design plays a pivotal role in facilitating these transitions 🌍 2. We aren’t just designing for transitions within the human experience, but within the natural world as well, trying to incorporate regenerative practices into design work ensures that we can create and innovate sustainably within planetary boundaries. 3. Collaboration is key, whether that be with other people or the natural world, asking what we can learn from each other and building off of what’s already out there brings rare and unique insights into creative innovation. It's a common oversight in STEM: we often focus on the technological prowess and engineering brilliance, the artistic side of things often gets left in the dust. Why should people in STEM care about aesthetics? Well, design is much more than surface deep—it shapes how we interact with and think about our tools. Take, for example, two drills: the rugged drill and a sleek, high-end elegant one. The rugged one doesn’t mind getting dirty. Drop it, share it, toss it in the back of a car—it’s built to withstand rough handling, making it an ideal companion for impromptu fixes in the rain. Its design implies durability and reliability. Now, consider the elegant drill. Its polished look and fine casing suggest it’s a tool you’d handle with care, perhaps hesitating to use it in less than perfect conditions. Despite potentially housing the same motor and battery as the rugged one, its fancy exterior influences how and when we choose to use it. This realisation underscores a broader point: design profoundly impacts user interaction. It’s not merely about aesthetics; it’s about practicality and how the product fits into our lives. Inspired by the insights from the video, we’re rethinking not just how we design our workshops but also how we can better prepare our young learners to appreciate and harness the full spectrum of STEAM. As we continue to explore this integration, we invite you to rethink how design influences your perception of tools and technology. Sketching is an important aspect while empathising with the focused user group, in design thinking. It helps the designer to quickly record the context as well as reflect concerns, which are beneficial during information analysis and synthesis. It is better than taking pictures sometimes as the designer can quickly scribble directly on the sketch to highlight some element or mark important aspects. Following is the sketch of a food outlet in campus, drawn as part of solving a design problem related to various food outlets at #IIITD campus(back in 2017).

POV: Broadening Perspectives in Design Education Walking out of an interview two years ago and not getting the job was a moment of clarity when I realized the administrator’s vision for the design and technology program was disappointingly limited to a traditional woodshop. My passion for design extends far beyond woodworking, encompassing a holistic approach that includes digital fabrication, user-centered design, fashion design, engineering design, electronics, and food design. This experience underscored the need for a broader understanding of design technology, one that fosters creativity, interdisciplinary learning, and real-world applications.
