Just like the fashion and art industries, sync licensing has trends. But very few artists pay attention to them. Here's some of the trends I've seen in the hundreds of briefs I've gotten in 2023 - Funk Inspired Music (Pop, R&B and Hip Hop) - Retro Throwback Vibes from the 60s, 70s and 80s - Songs with Brass Arrangements (horns (especially live horns) always win - Use of Vocalese (or heavy background vocals - consider adding a vocalese or BGV mix to your submission). - Trailerized vibes for use in non-trailer sync (Ads, TV, Promos) So, what trends do I expect to see in 2024? Real artists ship. They publish. They perform. And they pay for feedback. This week, I had the privilege of watching children and teens (including my own!) take the stage in North Bay’s Kiwanis Music Festival, playing for the judicator and their peers. The judicator is paid to score and give feedback to every child. This year, our judicator, Ryan Baxter, called each child up to the piano – in front of the entire audience – and gave them personal feedback on how to improve their performance. Then he asked them to play a few bars again. This is how we get better: Create. Ship. Get feedback from people we trust. Repeat. Kiwanis scores are never perfect – they’re rarely above 90! But if we wait for perfection, we’ll never create anything good. Week 6 of Brandi Beals #8weekchallenge with the #DataCareersSummit is about finalizing and deploying. It’s time to ship!
