Letter from America As I prepare to depart JFK International Air Terminal this evening on the Delta Air Lines flight direct to Edinburgh (storm #Babet allowing) I feel compelled to share some thoughts on my experience this week. 🌆 To spend time in the company of international founders, investors and innovators is a reminder of the incredible opportunity to use tech to improve our world and critically that you must build "global first". Market opportunity, capital and talent are in ready supply if your proposition is potentially "globally significant" but you need to get out there and sell because that is what the competition is doing. 🌆 The narrative of why Govtech has succeeded in Scotland resonates with all, with CivTech Scotland as a great case study. The challenges faced by smaller companies securing opportunities with Government are universal. The facility of a Scottish cluster, open to all, as an entry point into Scotland resonated well. But this trip is only a start and now the hard work of making connections and supporting projects must begin if The Scottish GovTech Cluster and the companies supported is to flourish. 🌆 Being present at international events is critical and there are huge advantages to be secured by supporting new initiatives such as New York Tech Week when access to key individuals can be achieved more readily but to optimise the opportunity you need to put in the work, eg. 25,000 steps every day I've been here :) 🌆 There has to be a "hook" to attract international founders & investors and it requires open collaboration as we have witnessed across New York this week. It's great to see initiatives such as Digital DNA Glasgow and next years 𝐗3 and Turing Fest in Scotland but we need to encourage more. The days of Technology conferences are over, founders & investors want dynamic opportunities where network collisions are built into the event culture. 🌆 The Tech Week New York event format with over 400 events taking place across the city has its challenges but overall I found it stimulating. Bouncing from event to event generated a dynamism that I loved and following Twitter, Saturday App and WhatsApp groups for "what was hot" generated the type of buzz I've only ever witnessed before at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society. The Andreessen Horowitz (A16z) team must be praised for what has been achieved this week and for the support they provided to us. 🌆 If you are planning a trip to New York (you must) I would definitely consider the new hotel concept Sonder Inc. which I've thoroughly enjoyed and staying in Queens, just three stops on the subway from Mid Town has been perfect. #scotlandisnow #NYTechWeek Your thoughts please: Mark Logan, Richard Lochhead, Karen Meechan, Jane Martin, Reuben Aitken, James Varga, Stephen Coleman OBE, Gillian Docherty OBE, Peter Proud FRSE, Mark Elliott, Paul Winstanley, Nick Fannin, Nick Freer Picture by Steven Turner taken from Long Island City looking over Manhatten.

🚀New chapter, new perspectives! About 7 months ago I took the leap and moved from the stable environment of a large German company into the exciting world of an international start-up. 🌍 The differences between everyday corporate life and the startup lifestyle couldn’t be greater – and I love it! It's not just the status quo that counts here, but rather the constant willingness to learn new things, try things out and sometimes take unconventional paths. I appreciate the flexibility and agility that ensure we can achieve something really big in a short period of time. Innovation is not just talked about here, it is lived every day. 🚀 In my new work environment I have not only found a position, but also a great new community. The international team welcomed me warmly from day one. Many thanks to everybody for this great start. I have the feeling that we are not just colleagues, but a real team that sticks together and supports each other. 🤝 And there is also enough space to exchange ideas and laugh together. Don't you think so? Check out the picture from our last international sales meeting before Christmas. And honestly, it could have been any other day and that's what makes it so special! 🎉 With this in mind, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, surrounded by your loved ones. May the coming year be as exciting and fulfilling as my journey here at ORIS Materials Intelligence. And even though a lot will change next year, I'm really looking forward to continuing.✨ Merry Christmas and a fantastic start to the new year! 🎄 P.S.: This post was created with the help of AI. (We are a digital company… 😉) #NewStart #TeamSpirit #MerryChristmas
