Revisiting Transformational Leadership James MacGregor Burns wrote about it first back in 1978, and then again 25 years later. Lots of research and writing on the subject. Burns describes "Transactional Leadership" as the kind where someone follows the leader because they are being paid, or promoted, or rewarded, or some form of transaction takes place. He contrasts that with "Transformational Leadership" that inspires and touches on our deepest felt needs and we follow because the leadership approach is tranforming. Often this type of leader ends up transforming an organization, a community or a country. It is the kind of leadership that works well with mission driven team members, volunteers, and those who want to make a difference.
