New product: Chacom Corona 429 Smooth Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since. Chacom’s Corona line isn’t made anymore, which is a shame. As with this one, it was a line of pipes with a light, blonde stain and a hand-cut, amber-like stem. With such a light stain, it’s typically only possible to use particularly excellent briar, as even the tiniest natural flaw in the wood would be clear to see. Hence, the briar that became this Corona was excellent, with swirling flame grain and bird’s-eye patterns circulating around its stummel. The shape is quite interesting, too; the pipe is essentially a billiard, but it has the bead lines of a Rhodesian, so we’ve labeled it as such. The pipe is also completely unsmoked and comes with its original box and sock. Given that ‘centenaire’ is French for ‘centenary,’ and given that the Chacom make itself only turned 100 in 2022, I don’t think this pipe was made to mark a century of Chacom pipes per se. It is certainly an older model, as evinced by the style of its box. I wonder, then, whether the Centenaire was produced to celebrate the birth of the Comoy venture writ large. That would make this pipe a 1979 manufacture, which makes sense to me, based on the style of the box it came in. And it’s a great pipe, one worthy of marking a milestone; it’s a bent pot, but only slightly, with a very warm, red stain that highlights plenty of bird’s-eye grain patterns underneath. Unlike many Chacom pipes, this one also has a hand-cut stem. The Centenaire also happens to be completely unsmoked and comes with its original box and sleeve. New product: BBB Tortoise 765 Smooth Bent Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked ‘BBB’ originally stood for ‘Blumfeld’s Best Briars’, so named after Louis Blumfeld after he took over the historic Alfred Frankenau Company in 1856. Later, the pipes came to be known as ‘Britain’s Best Briars’. Though the name might have changed, the quality of the pipes did not – they really were fantastic pipes, made in the classic style of the English-French shape chart. Like GBD, Dunhill, and Barling’s, BBB are pipes with a rich history behind them, proudly holding the title of “the oldest trade mark in the [pipe] industry.” I’m particularly partial to BBB’s Tortoise line. The combination of a chestnut stain, a mother of pearl hued stem, and a brass ring between them, gave resulted in what I’d consider to be one of the most elegant designs in British pipe history. This Tortoise is also rendered in a distinctly English-French shape, the bullmoose, made famous by early 20th century makes such as BBB and GBD. On a side note, judging by the nomenclature and brass ‘BBB’ rondelle in the stem, I would estimate that this pipe was made prior to BBB’s merger under Cadogan Investments in 1980, which may make it even more appealing to collectors. This BBB is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. Lighter stains such as these are typically used on better blocks of briar, as they are far more transparent when it comes to grain quality and patterns. This one has plenty of beautiful, tight-knit bird’s-eye around its bowl, as should be expected. This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to help with the break in process. New product: Faaborg Flame Grain Large Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates Faaborg pipes were made by Viggo Nielsen, one of the godfathers of Danish pipe design and the founder of Bari, in collaboration with his sons Jørgen Nielsen and Kai Nielsen. After Viggo sold the Bari make in 1978, Faaborg served as an outlet for Viggo’s continued desire to produce hand made pipes, which he and his sons did well into the last years of Viggo’s life. It is hard to go wrong with a pipe from not one, but three masters of Danish pipe-making. This Flame Grain grade Faaborg from the Nielsens is testament to that; true to its designation, flame grain patterns cover its bowl and the sides of its shank, with pools of bird’s-eyes flowing on its underside and rim. The shape is a particularly large, half-saddle brandy, with plenty of room in its chamber for a good long smoke, whatever the blend. The condition is great. There’s some minor, inner rim darkening, and one or two small handling marks, but nothing I’d call concerning. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters, though it would likely accommodate an adapter for non-filtered use if the next owner prefers. New product: GBD Sable Colossus 9552 Smooth Calabash Estate Briar Pipe GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker most associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought by English company Oppenheimer at the beginning of the 20th century, who opened factories in London and Paris to meet an increasing demand for the make’s high-quality and highly desirable pipes. Partly owing to the make’s inventive, yet traditional shapes, and partly due to the high standards of their production, GBD pipes are particularly coveted by collectors, as well as those who simply appreciate classic, well-made smoking instruments. Along with the Collector and Conquest series, the Colossus was, as can be imagined, a series for GBD’s larger than average pipes. While this one certainly isn’t a magnum-sized GBD, it does nonetheless have a relatively deep bowl, in part owing to its calabash-style shape. The grain on this one is particularly enjoyable, being covered in bird’s-eye patterns, along with some nice cross grain over its rim and underside. The condition is great. The first harvest, called “desboia,“ produces “virgin cork.“ Nine years later, the “secundeira“ is extracted, but it is still not suitable for stoppers due to its irregularity. Only after another 9 years, at 43 years old, do we obtain “amadia,“ high-quality cork perfect for stoppers. From then on, every 9 years, the cork can be harvested and used to make stoppers. New product: Charatans Make Rarity Extra Large Bent Egg Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates - $225 While Dunhill may be Britain’s most famous pipe brand, Charatan is not only older, but has the honor of being the first to have made its pipes entirely in-house. ‘Charatan’s Make’ referred to the fact that, at a time when other pipe companies were sourcing stummels and stems carved from other companies before assembling them in their factories and workshops, Charatan made every part of their pipes on the Charatan premises. So began a legacy of high-quality pipe-making under the Charatan name, one whose employees, at one time or another, included Joel Sasieni, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall fame. Charatan’s Rarity is (was) not a common series. In fact, I think I can count the ones I’ve seen up close on one hand. They’re Lane-era pipes and, as has been documented by Tad Gage, they came about from instances where the briar, during the course of its hand turning, would reveal grain that was great on the whole, but had one or two minor, cosmetic imperfections that were better served by sandblasting. This one is a magnificent, very large example of the Rarity series. I’ve categorized it as an ‘egg,’ but you could also call it a swan of sorts. The bowl sports nicely uniform straight grain, which transitions into a crisp sandblast both on the rim and from the base, right up along the shank. The condition is great.
