On #Juneteenth, we celebrate the hard-fought freedoms won by those who came before us. It is a day of joy, but also a day of somber reflection on how much further we need to go. At CapEQ, we work to invest in Black-owned businesses, today and everyday, because we know that they are not supported at the same levels as their white counterparts. Watch our Path to 15|55 documentary short that dives into how supporting Black-owned businesses creates jobs and will add $55 billion to our economy.

The 15|55 Cohort is exactly what lending needs. We need to stop our shift back towards institutionalized lending. This should be mandatory for all CDFIs.

For WSM’s three-year anniversary, I wanted celebrate my two patient, beautiful, powerful, brilliant, and incredible partners. For the last three years, I’ve deployed brute force and sheer will to move our firm forward. And that worked great when WSM was an idea— it even worked when it became a job, and then a career. But, at year three, WSM has turned into an organization. Brute force and sheer will aren’t working anymore. Fortunately, I have Natalie and Katie. Natalie is the soul of WSM Law. She has an ability to make decision-makers understand and care about her clients because she understands and cares about them, more than they probably even realize. It is not a show. When we opened WSM, we worried that someone may steal our concept: We fight for women. But the concept is worthless unless you really in-your-bones-and-soul mean it. So you can’t steal it. Because we have Natalie. Which makes Katie WSM’s brain. With our jobs, it is easy to get lost in drama and chaos, but Katie is constant. She is an unblinking, immovable object. She is the rock in the storm that we can all cling on to. Katie can see the entire board (even as it grows exponentially before her eyes), step back, take a beat, assess it, and then act. Every time. WSM continues to grow not because of brute force and reaction, but because of Katie’s calculated action. All of that is to say that I am incredibly proud, unbelievably lucky, and can’t wait to see how these two women grow WSM Law over the next three years.
