This morning, we hosted The Whitehall & Industry Group's Breakfast meeting with Gwen Parry Jones, Interim CEO at Great British Nuclear. IOP CEO Tom Grinyer opened the meeting by introducing the 'Physics Powering the Green Economy' report that we launched earlier this week. In our survey, 8/10 physicists believe the UK will miss its net zero targets. Nuclear is one of five technology areas in our report that is key for tackling climate change, delivering net zero and growing a green economy – and physics research and innovation is central in developing them. Also when we have spikes in cost of Natural Gas. This especially important where pipelines are not built to create maximum supply. Our country then becomes more dependent on foreign sources of supply, making us especially vulnerable to the kinds of Threats that Europe faced over the winter of 2022-2023, albeit not as severe, vulnerable nonetheless.
