H.B. 79 is a new bipartisan bill that would bring energy efficiency back to Ohio utility customers. The cheapest, easiest action Ohio can take is to encourage utilities to run energy efficiency programs that reduce demand. Utilities win. Ohioans win. https://lnkd.in/gdUWJhXj

During this week's Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Open Meeting, Commissioner Christie noted that 90% of PJM Interconnection’s peak and 75% of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)’s peak during recent Winter Storm Gerri was served by dispatchable natural gas, coal, and nuclear resources. The storm drove up heating demand to some of the highest levels since Winter Storm Elliott, which caused widespread power outages. Fortunately, the lights have stayed on, but with the cold temperatures staying through the weekend and the increasing intensity of winter storms, we must pay close attention to the pace of retirements and ensure that public policy is not jeopardizing the availability of electricity that these resources provide. This is an interesting one to me, because the way I see it is that this is the governments way of paving the way to complete ownership of the grid. As we’ve very clearly seen over the last 50 years, our government doesn’t exactly do the most efficient job with…anything, really. But let me explain my perspective: in doing this, they are telling private investors that unless they rely on government money, they can never hope to invest in generators. I’m willing to bet that these subsidized projects will soar through regulatory comittees which would normally take near a decade, similar to the regulatory disaster with the recent closure of the nuclear Nuscale project This is good news in that Texas will gain much needed generators, but it is a blow to our economic freedom and liberty as our government gains ironclad control of yet another industry.

Very interesting and concerning report from Powerex outlining the significant strains on the regional energy system of the Pacific Northwest and Alberta during the January 2024 winter storm. There are a couple alarming takeaways from the event: 1. Without significantly increased imports aided by interconnection into the PNW system we likely would have had a regional electricity supply disruption. Powerex identifies that there was inadequate capacity during peak demand hours in the US system. This underscores the need for more transmission are more redundancy/resiliency in generation sources across regions to support each other however; 2. Not all regions can rely on imports at the same time. The California system was still a net importer and the BC system provided nominal exports to the US PNW. Relief was only possible because of generation in the Rockies and US SW (primarily thermal generation). 3. The PNW system displayed both capacity and fuel shortages, a massive problem. Hydro reserves were drawn down and the amount of gas generation was no adequately sized to meet energy needs for the 5 day period. Climate change worsening fuel availability from hydro, limited growth potential for nuclear and policy driven limits on gas generation have squeezed the area. Thanks to Ross Kaminsky at KOA for a great discussion about grid reliability and the optimal energy mix. While renewables are crucial to a diverse energy portfolio, the foundation of grid stability lies in permanent power sources like nuclear and natural gas. This balanced approach is essential for meeting our energy needs reliably and efficiently.
