There is a saying in music - "Music is a metaphor for life". A lot of the time, musicians seem to just blurt this out willy nilly, like they are trying to sell a bumper sticker. It wasn't until I heard Vinh Giang say "your reality is negotiable" when I started to really understand how music can be a metaphor for life. We often go through believing our lives are set, bound by the jobs we have, the traditions our parents bestowed on us, and the standards society views as gospel. There is some truth to this, but the reality is, the only person in control of your destiny, is yourself. For the first 8 years of my professional music career, I fell into the trap of believing the writing was on the wall, and no matter how hard I tried, I was destined to become another statistic, contributing to the 93% of musicians who fail every year. I was almost resigned to this when I shut down my first business at the end of 2023. So I got a massive dose of reality when I heard Vinh Giang's quote, and realised if I quit then and there, then it'd be all through my own doing, and I'd had no one else to blame, but myself. There will be times when you will feel everything is against you, and no matter how hard you try, nothing will seem to work. I felt this way for the best part of 8 years, where no matter how many things I did well, I always seemed to do something wrong. But that's the thing about life, you can't have it only one way, and I had to quickly accept that not everything will go my way. The thing that can go my way, is how I respond to my mistakes, and the actions I take to try and improve everyday. So to answer the question, what has this got to do with music? It is up to you to be a guiding light and beacon of optimism for your children, instilling in them the belief that music serves as a conduit to self-discovery and authenticity. It's about empowering them to chart their course amidst the cacophony of doubt, to embrace their imperfections, and embark on a journey of perpetual growth. The Power of Music Series A few years back my wife and I went to visit our son in Boston. It’s a 2 ½ hour drive from our home in Westport, Connecticut. When we began our trip home, the first thing we did, as most any of us would do, was turn on the music. The station was playing a Marshall Tucker song that I hadn’t heard in over 25 years. That was the music of my youth. My tastes and interests have long since changed, but that is not the point. Within a note I could feel chills run down my spine. The memories evoked by the music remained fresh. More importantly, I was able to sound out every note played on the guitar before it was played by the musician. There are hundreds, if not thousands of notes played on the guitar during that 6 plus minute song and all of them spilled from my lips effortlessly. Why? That was a long time ago and that is a lot of stuff to memorize. Give me 10 randomized numbers or names and I will struggle to remember them all. But the music was no problem. What is it about music that can enable a person to do something so spectacular with such ease? Hard to do things are generally taxing. But not music. It is hard for me to recall a task complex that feels so easy to do. Music has always fascinated me and its impact on my life has been and continues to be nothing short of magical. It makes me calm when I am anxious, It pumps me up when I exercise, it turns sad memories into tears of happiness, and good memories into joy.  It is the spark I seek when I am trying to unlock creativity. It is the edge I rely upon when my work demands sustained focus.  It is my drug of choice when I want to feel good and get things done. As powerful as that statement is, it undersells the scope and dimension of the impact of this incredible gift that I believe we fail to fully appreciate. Music amplifies life. It is the superhighway that leads directly to your emotional center. Emotions are the things that make experiences memorable, pain tolerable, and love everlasting. Plain and simple: emotions make life worth living. Music isn’t the only thing capable of tugging on your heart strings. A wedding, a newborn child, travel experiences, dinner with good friends, just to name a few, are all capable of elevating your mood and outlook. The difference is that many of those things are episodic, complicated with narratives and memories, and bounded by planning and constraints. Music comes with none of those complications. There is nothing like a live performance, but the pleasures of listening are always at your disposal. And so is the power to change how you experience life. More to come

#3 - The #Sounds of Music - Part One Music is the essence of my life. #Music is one of the main pillars of who I am. Music expresses my personality. Music has a profound impact on the human #soul. Music has the power to evoke emotions, uplift spirits, and create a deep sense of connection. Listening to music can bring joy, comfort, and solace. Different genres can resonate with various emotions, helping individuals process their feelings and experiences. Music often serves as a form of expression, allowing artists to convey complex #emotions and listeners to relate and find relief in shared experiences. Music acts as a unifying force in #Western society, fostering connections, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging among people from various backgrounds. Through its ability to evoke emotions, reflect cultural diversity, and inspire social change, music strengthens the bonds that tie our #liberal and #democratic communities together. Music enriches my life; I’ve been going to concerts since I was a teenager to hear musicians play #live. I’ve been to hundreds of shows over the years, and nothing can compete with the energy of live music. The best part of moving to the US is the privilege of seeing the world’s top musicians nearby, like Paul McCartney, Eric #Clapton, Robert Plant, Bruce #Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, Coldplay, Green Day, Bruno Mars, #U2, Guns and Roses, #Metallica, Thom Yorke, The #Cure, #Florence and the Machine, Roger #Waters and many others. These are some examples of how I value music and #entertainment and how I put my money where my mouth is. However, buying a ticket to a #concert is the final stage of music #knowledge. The beginning of acquiring music knowledge starts with what people #listen to in their free time. The next stage of music knowledge is understanding why these #lyrics were written, who wrote them, why an artist chose to compose a text, what inspired an artist to write a text, what the political environment was like at that time, and what the life #journey of the artist that led them to write texts that resonate with people to this day was like. Moreover, music knowledge is not only what you like listening to but also knowing what genres of music exist, their #cultural origin, and the most known artists of each of them. Music knowledge is also understanding the context of a poem or a musical piece to our culture and what it signifies. This is the first part of The Sounds of Music. From a very young age, music has been an integral part of my life. It wasn't just a collection of tunes or rhythms for me; it became a way for me to destress, reflect, and embrace myself. More than instruments and vocals, music has been a lifestyle, influencing how I perceive and interact with the world around me. I'd like to share how listening to music has influenced me in various ways- 1. A Lesson from Genre Exploration: Growing up, I exclusively listened to the sounds of rock music. The intricate melodies of jazz, the rhythms of pop, and the bold beats of hip hop were foreign to me. However, as I grew up and started interacting with various people, I ventured into listening to other genres. This exploration wasn't just about discovering new music; it was a lesson in patience. This patience has been invaluable, teaching me the importance of giving new ideas and unfamiliar perspectives the time they deserve to show their true potential. 2. Embracing Diversity: My journey with different musical genres became a journey of embracing diversity. Each genre, like each individual in a workplace, brings its unique flavour and essence. In my professional life, I've learned to value and listen to different trains of thoughts. Just like a well-composed symphony, a diverse team can create something greater, leading to innovative solutions and creative breakthroughs. 3. Finding Common Ground: Understanding and appreciating various music genres has also equipped me the ability to make conversation with almost anyone. Whether it's discussing the latest hip-hop trends or the timelessness of rock, music has been a bridge to connect with people. This translated to curiosity, to understanding different market niches, client needs, and industry trends, enabling me to build stronger relationships which in turn helped me to build an effective professional network. 4. Embracing the 'I Don't Know': A curator once asked me at an event “How do you judge a DJ?” and I did not have an answer because I did not know the intricacies. That led to a knowledge sharing conversation with this curator. One of the most profound lessons from my musical exploration has been learning the value of listening to others and admitting when I don't know something. Just as I've discovered new musical genres through recommendations and discussions, in my professional life, I've learned the importance of being open to others' knowledge and perspectives. Just like in conversations about unfamiliar music genres, I've found strength in saying, "I don't know, but I'm eager to learn." This approach has not only allowed me to expand my understanding but also to build trust. It’s a humble admission that no one knows everything, but together, we can learn and grow. In a world that often values expertise and knowledge, acknowledging our gaps can be a powerful tool for our own development. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

What if building a business could be like making music? 🤔 After 10 years working in the music industry, being surrounded by musicians, music producers and DJs... I noticed that there are two types of musicians. First, those who seek complexity. They're like alchemists; constantly learning, experimenting with multiple genres and sounds. They strive to keep up with the latest technology, tools and techniques to be on top of their game.  They craft sophisticated arrangements, building layers upon layers of sound. Take Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. With its changing rhythms, complex harmonies, and unconventional structure. Most people would agree —it's a good example of complex. On the flip side, some musicians thrive in simplicity. They seek to capture the very essence of music. Take Billie Eilish —who just won Best Original Song Award at Oscars 2024. She and her brother Finneas produced a Grammy award album in a tiny bedroom. With a minimalist approach to production, their music cuts straight to the emotional core. Now let's imagine that building a business is like building a song. It can be made complex, and it can be made simple. The essence of music doesn't need the latest technology or the latest strategies. And the same applies to business. So, which approach is better? Well... objectively speaking, there is no better. Both are valid. A better question is to ask what FEELS better. For you, the artist. Making music is NOT supposed to be stressful. The point is to do it in a way that feels good. Which is why many musicians say it's their therapy. It creates a nice feeling; so, they keep doing it. What if building a business could also feel like therapy? And, most importantly... which type of artist would you choose to be?

Social Notes and Peer Influences: Our social circles profoundly influence our musical preferences. Friends, family, and peers introduce us to new genres and artists, expanding our musical horizons. Social identity theory suggests we adopt the musical tastes of our social groups to strengthen our sense of belonging. Popular culture, social media, and streaming platforms further shape our preferences, introducing us to trending songs and artists. Our love for specific tunes is a harmonious amalgamation of our individuality and the world around us.
