𝖢𝗈𝗍𝗍𝗈𝗇 𝖡𝖾𝗅𝗍. ➥ 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Research on 19 farms has shown a reduction in production costs by an average of $53 per acre and an increase in net farm income by $150 per acre. ➥ 𝐒𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Benchmarks established on over 2 million acres provide personalized soil health reports, empowering farmers with data to improve carbon and water storage. ➥ 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Over 25 field demonstrations and workshops have engaged more than 1,300 farmers and advisors, fostering a community of practice for soil health. ➥ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: Interns from Historically Black Colleges and Universities are gaining hands-on experience in translating science into actionable farming practices. This initiative, supported by partners like the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol, Cotton Incorporated, and foundations such as The Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation and Walmart Foundation, aims to eliminate one million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from the atmosphere by 2026. A couple of weeks ago, Walmart held its annual Land Summit, convening suppliers, producers, NGO partners and other stakeholders for important discussions on regenerative supply chains. One of the key focuses of the Summit was underscoring the critical impact of regenerative soil practices. For example, we learned that in #soilhealth management systems, "cover is key": a layer of mulch which protects against weeds and reduces topsoil erosion. It also improves pollinator diversity and allows predator insects to thrive, reducing the need for pesticides. Beside, implementing soil systems like these can help reduce resource usage on farms by 40-50%, which helps reduce costs for farmers and preserves the land for future generations to nurture. 🌍 Our 2022 Carbon Footprint exercise led to an in-depth assessment and the development of a robust carbon reduction strategy detailed in our 2023 Impact Creation Report. One key initiative is our partnership with Soil Capital | B Corp™ to support farmers in transitioning to more profitable and regenerative agriculture. This collaboration aims to promote healthier ecosystems and ensure more resilient food production from the ground up. Our carbon contribution has financed the adoption of regenerative practices on a total of 209 hectares of crop area across 26 farms in France, Belgium, and the UK. So often we think about innovation as the space reserved for tech companies and their products. Great to see LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) developing this collaborative approach to one of the biggest sustainability challenges we have: how to produce enough high quality food whilst regenerating nature and capturing carbon. How about running a similar project in a vineyard with Sustainable Wine Roundtable ?

There are valuable businesses that provide value beyond profit. I attended a presentation on regenerative food and farming hosted by the Bend chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby. The three key take aways were: spending money locally, knowledge of land use within your community, and educating yourself and peers. There is potential for an emerging market in sustainable food processing here in central Oregon to keep money local and support environmental and socioeconomic impacts that regenerative agriculture can have.

As World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 2024, let us consider the benefits of regenerative agriculture. Given that this year’s theme is Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience, the application of regenerative agriculture practices has benefits which includes improving Soil health via increasing Soil Organic Carbon, optimising water efficiency, among others. In addition, the adoption of regenerative agriculture is increasingly being adopted by many upstream brands in the apparels and textiles sector. For example, this is being demonstrated by the fact that many of them are aligning with Sustainable Certification Systems including setting commitments on regenerative agriculture, conducting pilots, developing strategies on biodiversity among other approaches. The Alliance of Cotton & Textile Stakeholders on Regenerative Agriculture or ACRE focuses on mainstreaming the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices in the cotton value chain. The Centre for Responsible Business, Solidaridad Asia and regenagri have joined hands to create a platform to promote #regenagripractices in #Cotton and to educate and engage with diverse stakeholders.
