The consistent thread throughout the mainstage presentations of this year’s AU, was Autodesk’s focus on, and development of AI tools. As we all know, one of the core tenets of AI development is having lots of data to train on. Time and again Autodesk’s Execs crowed about just how much customer data Autodesk retained, 15 Billion documents, 40 Petabytes of data, in the context of AI. This may make great marketing but it deeply concerned many customers as to what their vendor is doing, or intends to do to their hosted data. In the Exec and AEC press conference, Autodesk rowed back on what they were actually doing with customer files, highlighting the conundrum of desperately wanting to use this data to train a base AI, but either knowing customer sentiment was mainly against it, or perhaps, not necessarily having the EULA (End User Licence Agreement) rights to do so. 'The Grid. A digital frontier.' I've had my head in the computer...investigating 4D modeling, optimization algorithms, AI, and even gaming engines. It's been driving me nuts. I'm in the AEC industry because I love to build ACTUAL things. It's amazing how nice a design looks on the screen...only to find out how hard it is to build. News: Autodesk SIGGRAPH Announcements: Generative AI Tools in Maya, Alliance for OpenUSD: Autodesk has made some big announcements at SIGGRAPH this year.  First, they are part of the new Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD),  to make it easier for artists to collaborate more effectively across projects, tools, and teams."  They are also exploring the power of AI to speed up and augment artist workflows by integrating NVIDIA Picasso into Maya. #AI technology isn’t new to us at Autodesk, and with 78% of business leaders believing AI will enhance their industry according to Autodesk’s 2024 State of Design & Make report, we’ve been working to create generative AI models that could be used for different use cases across architecture, product design, entertainment, and more. One of our research efforts is Project Bernini, an experimental generative AI model that can quickly generate 3D shapes from a variety of inputs including a single 2D image, multiple images showing different views of an object, point clouds, voxels, or text. “The AI model that underlies Project Bernini is designed to have an understanding of how real-world objects tend to exist. For example, it can see an image of a water pitcher and understand that the resulting 3D image should be hollow and water-tight.” While Project Bernini is still experimental and not yet available for public use, the Autodesk AI Lab team is working to refine this technology so you can design and make anything.
