Google has really lost their way & their purpose. Of course, the "blue links" idea is dated and they are going to evolve. But CREATORS/PUBLISHERS made Google the behemoth it is today. There are no "good user experiences" without good sites (& content). There is no "we remember what users like" in the algorithm without CONTENT CREATORS. The essential lifeblood of any information that needs to be organized. Google doesn't own your content. No amount of PR spin or AI this or that can change that. The courts and copyright need to move more swiftly to protect creators. In the meantime, Google needs to take a look in the mirror. Do they exist for users or for their pocketbook? Happy birthday Google! 🥳 Google turns 25 today, can you believe it? As a translator and writer I do a lot of researching every day on the most different topics, and Google is my favorite search engine. I am old enough to remember that there was a time when Google (and even browsers…) didn’t exist, and the revolution that these new technologies brought. Scary at first, but inevitable. And I can’t imagine how difficult my job would be now without these tools. ❓ Why you should use pronouns like "it", "they", "them", "their", "this", or "that" very carefully 😧 I have just completed the excellent Google technical writing course. One piece of advice particularly resonates with me: recognize and avoid ambiguous pronouns. When I review engineering blog posts, I see way too many sentences with those pronouns. Ambiguous pronouns can confuse readers about which noun they refer to. Consider the following Google pronoun guidelines: - Only use a pronoun after introducing the noun; never use a pronoun before introducing the noun. - Place the pronoun as close as possible to the referring noun. In general, if more than five words separate your noun from your pronoun, consider repeating the noun instead of using the pronoun. - If you introduce a second noun between your noun and your pronoun, reuse your noun instead of using a pronoun. Example: Instead of: "Running the process configures permissions and generates a user ID. This lets users authenticate to the app." Write: "Running the process configures permissions and generates a user ID. This user ID lets users authenticate." #TechnicalWriting

a smol tip for editing someone else's Google Doc: let the author know you're not finished giving feedback. I often do a first pass through a blog post where I leave a few high-level comments. Then I come back a few hours (or days (or weeks)) later with fresh eyes to finish my revisions and clarify my illegible comments. But that time gap of leaving a bunch of comments and then going silent signals to the proactive writer that they should jump in and start making edits. So now I always leave a "still working on this" comment in the doc so they don't feel they have to take any action yet. That's it. That's the tip.

Google SGE... if you are unsure how to make a case to get traction around "authorship"... try this: 1. Authorship helps establish credibility which is used to determine quality. 2. Quality content will have an increased chance to be clicked on. 3. Quality content that is clicked on can lead to improved rankings. So... do us all a favor and help Google bridge the gap between offline and online credibility... with authorship schema.

I thought this was a very interesting post. I've been having some difficulty keeping up with all the official comms on recent Google developments so I thought I'd re-share with my thoughts in case others have missed it. Key thoughts from me: 1. The first two paragraphs are important and should probably be documented in a static and official way somewhere (they probably are!) 2.
