To effectively address America's mental health and substance use crisis and improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities we must address the stigma (discrimination) that is woven into the fabric of American life. The Kennedy Forum McKinsey Health Institute and Stop Stigma Together hosted an important and impactful convening, bringing together passionate stakeholders focused on improving the lives of people with lived and living experience with mental health and substance use challenges. Some highlights: 1. These issues are complex 2. We only succeed if we work together 3. We need a multifaceted approach 4. We need policies and practices that deliver hope and help people thrive 5. Quick policy wins can be a path to significant change 6. We need to be patient and play the long game (unravelling decades of flawed policy and practice will take time) 7. The ultimate measure of success is determined by the improvement in the lives of people with lived and living experience Jessica R. Prioritizing mental health care is necessary for any form of justice in our society.
