I didn't love my first month at Google. I know what you're thinking... How could I not love working at the coolest place in the world with the most incredible perks? I had major culture shock. Everything I had learned about corporate life was thrown out the window. I didn't know how to operate. Okay, okay... 🥤 I did love my morning smoothie I would pick up at the cafe downstairs. 💃🏽 I did love my weekly Bollywood dance class taught by the coolest coworker. 🚗 I did love parking in the Google lot when attending an event at the amphitheater nearby. (a majorly overlooked perk, right Katie?!) But what made me really love working at Google? I figured out how to win. I learned how to manage my time, understand projects and collaborate the Google way. I became Googley. And I absolutely thrived. Everyone wants to be a high performer. But rarely is high performance defined or taught. And it's different at every company. Want to see more engaged, performing employees? Teach them how to operate at your company. Teach them how to win at your company.

Why being NERVOUS always haunts you… ———— It was D-1 and I was getting ready to present on a big stage. It was the culmination of my time at Apple Developer Academy as an intern. My team was chosen as one of the 5 teams to present our apps. It was such a big event for us and I didn’t want to ruin it by saying the wrong things or choking while presenting. I got REALLY NERVOUS. I knew I had it. I knew what I wanted to say. I knew I could do well! But still, I WAS NERVOUS AS HECK! A guy from the Apple team was there to help us rehearse and I told him, “Gilbert, I’m super nervous. Palms are cold.” You know what he said? This sentence would forever change how I perceive nervousness. “Ryan, you’re not nervous. You’re excited” “You’re about to talk about your project, your baby. You’re excited to tell the world about this, and that’s why you feel what you feel right now” ……. That sentence, that ONE sentence, changed my life. Nervousness won’t haunt me anymore. I just need to perceive it the right way; turn it into excitement. #PublicSpeaking #WhatsYourStory #Nervous #Excited #MindBlown

Landed at Google! Not always a straight path, but so worth it! 2019 : A missed opportunity at a tier 1 engineering college. 2023 : I came within reach of my masters, but missed by margin. 2023 : Thrilled to announce, I've secured a position at Google! 🚀 This is a dream come true, but it's just the beginning. I'm excited to set new goals and keep learning because the journey isn't over yet! Learning along the way so far : • Never give up on your dreams, even when things get tough. • Setbacks make you stronger. • Family and friends are super important. So thankful! Absolutely! While hard work is essential, focusing solely on effort isn't enough. Especially in technical roles, it's easy to get caught up in the process without considering the broader impact. For instance, building a machine learning model with great metrics is impressive, but the real question is: what is the business impact? How does this model generate impactful results, drive revenue, or support better business decisions? It's crucial to look beyond the task and understand the ultimate goal of our work. This shift in perspective can significantly enhance our growth and contributions.

🔥Hot take: If you aren’t actively discouraging disrespectful behavior in your company, you end up implicitly encouraging it. Along with core values/leadership principles about ownership, having backbone, doing the right thing etc, a company needs to explicitly state a no-tolerance policy for disrespectful behavior. Five eye-opening things I realized three months after joining Google: 1. I am just as smart as the people there: * Most people have this impostor syndrome when they join a place like Google * There is a myth that everyone is smarter than you * But as I interacted more with my colleagues, I felt at ease after getting over the Noogler phase 2. You can think long term: - A massive difference for me was that I could - for the first time in my career - really balance long-term thinking with short-term resumes - People were really interested in what you could do one year, three years, and five years and beyond 3. Getting different parts of the organization to work together unlocks massive opportunities: * Google is more like a country, less than a country 😀 * Different groups and product areas might have very different incentives * Aligning their incentives and getting to work together unlocks opportunities that just did not exist * Product Managers play a key role in this area I would love to hear from other Googlers and Xooglers. What did you realize over time that wasn't apparent earlier?
