Awesome post Samantha Nestman 👏 Really great to see you developing empathy towards mentors ❤️ As someone who mentors those looking to start careers in UX/UI, here’s three additional things juniors and those fresh out of boot camps should also consider when seeking help from mentors: ⌚️- Show up on time and be appreciative Mentoring demands significant time, especially on busy workdays. Make sure to respect their time by showing up to the call and on time 💫 💪- Action the feedback Feedback and advice mentors give you aren’t random, they’re usually based on things that worked for themselves or their other mentees. Make sure to action the feedback; plus, if you do, mentors will be more willing to give their time again 😉 🔥 - Show the fire in your belly The industry is tough to break into and bootcamp case studies alone won’t cut it. Look at services/apps you use by start ups you love and make small case studies for them, post it on LinkedIn/instagram/X etc. and tag the hell out of them to get noticed, it’ll help you stand out and show how serious you are for a role 💪 Hopefully, this helps those looking for help 💫

When I was working on my website portfolio, I wanted to to get it in front of as many eyes as possible. Trevor Nielsen looked like an awesome designer so I thought "hey, I'll try hitting him up". When I reached out to Trevor Nielsen, this is essentially what I did: "Hi Trevor! I'm a lost college student who wants you to look at my portfolio and give me feedback. Thanks!" *Not exactly what I said but pretty much* Here's the reason why this was WRONG: 🚩 This was a cold call message: I had never interacted with Trevor before this point. Interactions can be messages, comments, likes, mentions, and more. If I had taken the time to have meaningful interactions with Trevor, I would have left a better impression of who I am and built an awesome connection with him. 🚩 I asked for something and gave nothing in return: I asked a professional designer, who has paid for and put in many hours into his craft to give me an hour of his valuable time... for free. Though some people love to mentor and give of their time for free, providing some value back to Trevor (a gift card, a review, etc.) would show how I value him. 🚩 I asked for his help on my timetable: Trevor is a busy guy (well, I assume he is). But I wanted to receive feedback as soon as possible. When asking for feedback or help, it should be when it's best for them. Trevor is a incredibly nice guy and was willing to help me even with this message I had sent him 😳 but take it from me, take the time to do the right things and you will build meaningful connections that will last you a long time!

Some marketing projects are just epic - they take over your life for a while, usually when something major is about to happen. And that's precisely the case with Little Starts Gift Cards.
