The National Privacy Commission (NPC) invites companies and organizations to apply for accreditation as Accountability Agent for the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) System. The APEC CBPR System is voluntary and accountability-based and facilitates data flows that respect privacy among APEC-member economies. The system requires organizations to develop and implement privacy policies and practices for all personal information they have collected or received that is subject to cross-border transfer to other participating APEC members. The Philippines became the ninth member economy participating in the CBPR System in March 2020. As the next step to fully implement the CBPR System in the Philippines, the NPC is currently working towards nominating an Accountability Agent who will certify companies in the APEC CBPR System. Accountability Agents perform a crucial role in the APEC CBPR System by certifying that participating companies or organizations' privacy policies and practices comply with the CBPR System requirements. Privacy Day 2024 - A Time for Celebration and Reflection Each year, January 28 marks the observance of the Council of Europe Convention (Convention 108). In 2006, this day laid a crucial foundation for global data privacy. At EuroPriSe, we take this day to reflect on the progress made and celebrate. The awareness among individuals regarding the safeguarding of their personal data continues to grow, aligning with the ongoing evolution of legislation—a positive development towards a heightened global standard of data privacy. In line with this, we also reflect on our EuroPriSe journey in recent years. We celebrate Privacy Day 2024 in a unique manner: We have recently introduced Germany's first certification for processors in accordance with Art. 42 GDPR. This certification, unparalleled in the EU, contributes significantly to elevating the standards of data privacy and ensuring transparency in data privacy compliance. However, this day also serves as a reminder of the substantial challenges that still lie ahead. → Data privacy breaches persist, and there are still too many of them. → Many companies perceive data privacy as a chore rather than an added value. → The importance of personal data privacy is not yet as widespread as it should be. Canada and the Philippines sign MoU on Data Protection 🇨🇦 🇵🇭 On October 20, 2023, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Privacy Commission of the Republic of the Philippines focused on their agreement to cooperate for data protection. The MoU includes several noteworthy aspects. The MoU outlines various areas of cooperation (within the constraints of their respective laws and without violating national security), including: 🔐 exchange of information regarding investigations;  🔐 mutual assistance in investigations for contravention of privacy and data protection laws; 🔐 coordination of joint investigations for cross-border data breaches; 🔐 knowledge sharing and training on privacy and data protection trends; and 🔐 exploring innovative and experimental data-sharing approaches Both countries, as members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Cross-Border Privacy Enforcement Arrangement (CPEA), agree to share information and cooperate on privacy enforcement to protect data privacy while facilitating information flow across economies, and aim to harmonize regulatory approaches for uniform application of data protection and privacy laws. Furthermore, the MoU establishes an information-sharing framework but emphasizes that it excludes personal data, also clarifying that there is no legal requirement for cooperation, especially in circumstances that would breach their legal responsibilities. #canada #philippines #dataprotection

California businesses must brace for tighter data protection standards as the CPPA partners with France’s CNIL, fostering international collaboration on privacy issues. “This declaration of cooperation is the CPPA’s latest example of cross-border collaboration. The CPPA previously joined the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) and the Global Privacy Enforcement Network (GPEN). In 2022, the Global Privacy Assembly voted to admit the CPPA as a full voting member and only second US organization to be granted this status. Just last year, the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) issued an adequacy determination establishing the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018’s equivalence with the DIFC’s Data Protection Law.” This cooperation signifies a new era of global regulatory alignment, emphasizing the need for robust compliance strategies.
