An airport for everyone....well that's not true as just 11% of the global population flew in 2018. A tiny group of very frequent flyers about 1% of the world population is estimated to account for 50% of commercial airline emissions! Jobs that pay salaries that mean air stewards have to go to food banks and can't afford to live local to the airport. Benefit local businesses, well as long as they are not hit by COVID, recession or significant rise in fares as aviation sees low cost airline a thing of the past as they have to meet greener fuels at 3-5X more than fossil fuel. And as the planet warms Spain may become too hot to sunbath! What is best profits for local taxi firms and overseas shareholders or reduction in emissions to save the planet for future generations? Dear LinkedIn family! Just wanted to give you a quick update on what's been keeping me busy lately. Over the last quarter, I've been diving deep into networking with property developers, consultants, and local communities, all centered around raising awareness about air quality. Must not forget to mention Institute of Directors (IoD) IoD British Asian Business Group's grand Iftar, @CBS, Aston Centre for Growth @FSB @buzzbusinesssolihull and many more. It's been a whirlwind of fascinating conversations and learning opportunities! These days have been jam-packed with challenges, but also with moments of inspiration as I connect with people who are equally passionate about making a difference. Together, we've been brainstorming ideas, sharing insights, and exploring ways to tackle air quality issues head-on. I gotta say, it's been quite the journey of growth and discovery. Every interaction has brought something new to the table, whether it's a fresh perspective or a game-changing solution. And while there's still much work to be done, I'm feeling optimistic about the progress we're making. OMG! We Did It 💙❤️💛 At Southwest Airlines we are all about having fun, and one of the things we LUV to do is Celebrating our People in a big way. Every quarter we have what is called a Deck Party, a companywide event where our employees come together after hours for free food, entertainment, and a chance to connect with people from different departments👏🏿👏👏🏻. And for the first time since the pandemic – our Department (People) along with our DEI Division got to sponsor it. I, Mariam K., and Laura had the honor of co-leading this effort with many volunteers to make what was originally on paper, come to life. Our People got to enjoy 🥘catered dishes, 💿DJ, 🕺🏾Karaoke, and feeling appreciated💓. What I LUV about Southwest is, they truly put the Power of the People to take charge. We started planning this event four months ago, and I honestly thought I was not going to be able to do it. I was nervous, anxious, wanting everything to go right, and most importantly being able to lead. But I am so grateful for our People, our People no matter what always have your back - and always reminded us that no matter what happens, it will be alright 🙏. 💯Despite the long nights, early mornings, and extra hours put in the day, this initiative was 100% worth it. And I could not be any prouder of everyone coming together within People & DEI to make this event a tremendous success. 🔹️People always ask why I do this? Our Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher’s approach to leadership was simple yet profound: put your people first, and the rest will follow 💙❤️💛 And last week, I finally met the guy who I not only call my spirit animal, but a incredible leader who truly follows Herbs approach ✈️ At Southwest, you gain more than just a career – you truly gain a family; even if you have never met “that family member” before. Chip Wasinsky is someone who I like to call a Aviation Champion who has been in industry for years, and joined Southwest 5 years ago advocating our People, (externally & internally); and recently graduated from our High Impact Leadership Program 💯. Last year Chip and I connected but never met in person, and while we have been messaging back and forth ever since – we seem to never cross paths in the office. Despite our differences in 🔹️ job title, 🔹️ background, and 🔹️ department – what we do share is the same heart, passion, and LUV for being a advocate to our People – and he simply saw me for who I was as a person, and not just from what others saw from the outside 🙏 Which is why last week, what started as a normal fun Thursday, turned into the day I finally met Chip in person. And this guy gave me the biggest hug and I was honestly star struck for a second. Despite his heavy workload, we sat down for almost an hour to simply chat – about his life at Southwest, advice being in leadership, and so on. Truly being the highlight of my week 😀 At Southwest, job titles do not matter here. Rather you are a Agent, Specialist, or the Manager of a department – we all treat each other with the same respect, love, and encourage you to be your authentic self – and that is something truly money cannot buy, because it is simply PRICELESS✈️ Thank you Chip for all that you do and I am grateful for our friendship Along with the rest of my Southwest Family.
