Our Southwest Airlines founder Herb Kelleher’s approach to leadership was simple yet profound: put your people first, and the rest will follow 💙❤️💛 And last week, I finally met the guy who I not only call my spirit animal, but a incredible leader who truly follows Herbs approach ✈️ At Southwest, you gain more than just a career – you truly gain a family; even if you have never met “that family member” before. Chip Wasinsky is someone who I like to call a Aviation Champion who has been in industry for years, and joined Southwest 5 years ago advocating our People, (externally & internally); and recently graduated from our High Impact Leadership Program 💯. Last year Chip and I connected but never met in person, and while we have been messaging back and forth ever since – we seem to never cross paths in the office. Despite our differences in 🔹️ job title, 🔹️ background, and 🔹️ department – what we do share is the same heart, passion, and LUV for being a advocate to our People – and he simply saw me for who I was as a person, and not just from what others saw from the outside 🙏 Which is why last week, what started as a normal fun Thursday, turned into the day I finally met Chip in person. And this guy gave me the biggest hug and I was honestly star struck for a second. Despite his heavy workload, we sat down for almost an hour to simply chat – about his life at Southwest, advice being in leadership, and so on. Truly being the highlight of my week 😀 At Southwest, job titles do not matter here. Rather you are a Agent, Specialist, or the Manager of a department – we all treat each other with the same respect, love, and encourage you to be your authentic self – and that is something truly money cannot buy, because it is simply PRICELESS✈️ Thank you Chip for all that you do and I am grateful for our friendship Along with the rest of my Southwest Family. ✈️✈️ - 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. I was flying home this weekend from my best friend’s wedding in North Carolina, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺, and I was impressed with what I experienced on 𝘿𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙖 𝘼𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨. As a business owner I am continually observing how others "do business." As I was prepping for an upcoming training called, 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘣𝘺 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯: 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘮 & 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴, on my three hour and 40 minute flight from Atlanta to Phoenix, I overheard something really beautiful. The Delta flight attendant approached a passenger in front of me and said the following, "Thank you Mr. (can't remember his name) for being an elite status member with Delta Airlines. We not only appreciate your business, but know we are grateful for you and want you to know you are seen and you are appreciated." - 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝗮𝗮𝗮𝘁?!! Honestly, 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 in that moment for simply hearing this interaction. 💙💙 I was not only impressed with what the flight attendant said, but I also appreciated that an organization as large as Delta Airlines, still ensures these small, intentional interactions take place in their BIG business. As you all know, I talk a lot on how small, yet intentional interactions make for big impact and how every interaction we have is an opportunity to build, maintain, or break down relationships and ultimately the culture of our organization. Thus, my closing question for you all, is what intentional action will you do today, tomorrow, this week to build the culture of your organization? When I'm asked about what made JetBlue stand out in its early days as I travel, my answer always remains the same: "It was the people!" In my opinion, there's nothing quite like a trusting family environment. Despite facing criticism, laughter, and even attempts to bring us down, we remained united and unwavering in our belief in our mission statement!! I experienced a masterclass in employee recognition this past weekend thanks to American Airlines 🛫 and their amazing crew. This is such a wonderful story for me to share from both a personal perspective and because of my genuine interest in the power of recognition and appreciation. 👨✈️ My dad has been a Captain for American Airlines for the past 35 years. This past weekend was his retirement flight and my family and I were able to join him for a final hurrah trip to Paris 🇫🇷 It was such a fun way to celebrate his career! 🙌 The crew did an amazing job celebrating my dad, particularly the First Officer, Annie (girl power!) who shared the most heartfelt message for my dad as we were landing back into NYC. I encourage you to listen to the video below of her PA. Why this is such a powerful recognition: ⏰ Timely - this was his final flight so no better time for the send-off message! 🤗 Personal - she highlighted his strengths & accomplishments (being a great mentor, his commitment to aviation that brought thousands and thousands of people to their destinations safely) as well as personal challenges (being away from family during trips) 🎉 Visible - no better way to share an important message than over the PA on an airplane. She certainly shared her sentiments with him directly, but sharing them publicly made it extra special and included the entire airplane in the recognition. ❤️ Authentic - you can hear the sincerity in her voice. 💪 Effort - this clip is just a highlight of all the sweet and thoughtful things the crew did over the weekend - from organizing dinner in Paris to bringing decorations to decorate the gate before takeoff - the time, thought and effort was so special! What also makes this great - is that American Airlines created a culture where Annie and the crew felt comfortable and empowered to share their appreciation for my dad. ✨ I hope this story sparks inspiration for you and that you share your appreciation for someone at work, at home and during your daily life. No matter what level or tenure you are, everyone can set the tone for creating a culture of recognition - you just have to do it! Celebrating the successful completion of a challenging project at JetBlue 🎉 The journey was tough, but the lessons learned were invaluable. There was much work put in as we looked to reinvent and create change.
