September is Hunger Action Month!🧡 This month, communities across America are committing to fight hunger during Hunger Action Month. As the leading hunger relief organization in Arkansas, our duty is to serve hungry children, families, and seniors. In Arkansas, 1 in 6 Arkansans are food-insecure, which means they struggle to find sufficient access to nutritious food. Regarding children, 1 in 5 are facing hunger, and in some rural areas, it’s even higher. This month, we encourage you to find ways to support hunger awareness in your community. Hunger relief organizations are in crisis. Especially those in rural areas. When I say hunger relief I mean the food shelves/pantries, school pantries and organizations doing the actual WORK Why are they in crisis? Answer: the need is the HIGHEST it’s ever been, they’re small organizations that don’t have the budgetary capacity to expand, they don’t have the human capacity to serve and the people above them making decisions don’t understand what is truly happening in rural communities nor do they have the compassion to physically come help. Our rural community organizations need help in every way possible. It’s time for us to show our human compassion and capabilities

Everyone needs nutritious food to thrive, and in every community in America, people are working hard to provide for themselves and their families. This morning, I received an email with the subject line "Skyrocketing Tuna". I immediately imagined it written in Indiana Jones font, advertising the lamest adventure movie ever. Once I stopped giggling, I was able to review a very serious report from our supply chain team. Simply put, a can of tuna fish - a staple of my childhood and Crosslines food pantry - has increased in price 70% this year. Seventy percent. In the last five months, we've seen 49% more families at Crosslines than we did in the same time last year. Last year was up 20% from the year before. Even after streamlining our services and consolidating under one roof (a measure which cut our utilities in HALF) this rapidly increasing demand for services is quickly outpacing our available resources. Inflation is hitting food prices hard. And it's hitting Crosslines too. We are stretched. Thin. Some simple math for you: A flat budget + 49% increase in demand + 70% price increase = Tuna is something we may no longer be able to provide the hundreds of families who visit us each week. What is it worth to you to feed a hungry child? Is it worth the price of a can of tuna? What if it was your child who was hungry? Will you help us, help them? For about the price of a cheeseburger meal, you can provide a family of four groceries for a week. I hope you join me in combatting hunger right here in SW Missouri. Every month it takes a minimum of $500 to feed these children. That isn't a balanced diet, but rather a simple cornmeal, rice, and beans. Black bears being drawn to communities by seasonal attractants like ripe fruits and unsecured garbage may end up being killed. Fall is a time of increased bear activity across the province, as black bears are trying to consume a large amount of food in preparation for their winter dormancy.
