A deep(ish) dive... With the latest Employment Hero survey being out, I thought we could take some time to have a look over the areas they have focussed on this time around. The first area we are going to look at is the cost to business for hiring new staff. Often this need comes about as a result of a staff member exiting the organisation due to a better offer elsewhere, or from needing to get out of an environment they find to be detrimental to their emotional and/ or mental wellbeing. No matter which of the reasons for their leaving, the price to the business is very high! On average, Australian businesses spend $23,000 on each new staff hire. For all businesses this is a considerable outlay, but for small Australian businesses it is potentially a huge burden on the organisation's bottom line. This figure of $23,000, per hire, is a wake-up call to all businesses; if you don't look after your staff, and ensure they know that you truly care for thier health and wellness, you could end up spending $23,000 many times a year, replacing staff that have left to work at organisations that do care for them. We're tasked with integrating sustainability and climate adaptation into our human capital planning, aiming for optimal staffing, training, and resource allocation... ...Yet, we're also expected to return more people to the office, counteracting the positive environmental impact of reduced office space, lowered commuting emissions, and decreased resource consumption linked to remote work? Our agility and remote work prowess have earned praise, with the understanding that performance should be evaluated based on results, quality, and accountability, rather than location... ...But now we're being told that this excellence isn't "meaningful" unless it's tied to physical presence in the office? This reminds me of the classic line from Wedding Crashers, "You shut your mouth when you're talking to me." Which path are we on? And as a solo parent excelling both at home and work, this push for "more meaningful work" threatens to steal at least an additional 10 hours per week away from my child. Great reminder. You deserve to take a break from work. There is more to life than answering work emails 24/7. If you do end up working crazy hours, did you know you can schedule an email via Outlook and have your email delayed to send during working hours? What message does sending an email at all hours of the night send to your colleagues, your employees, even your clients that are on the receiving end? Instead of presenting as helpful and super responsive, it can present as frenzied, lack of boundaries, lack of a work life balance, and can set a bad value example for your staff and clients. Over the last two weeks, I conducted a survey among my LinkedIn connections regarding work-related stress for Bellwether Software Solutions. The results are concerning: 65% of respondents reported feeling stressed. This is a health topic that affects us all, not only for our wellbeing but also for our productivity. (Companies take notice) A quick solution to combat work-related stress is to take short breaks throughout the day.
