An additional reason for Marvell Technology’s relatively early announcement of its 800ZR/ZR+ solutions in the summer (please see: https://lnkd.in/ePeR2it6), would be as a preemptive action to get potential competitors of the modules to think twice before entering the space. The avoidance of as many players as happened at 400ZR (totaling at least around the mid-teens), resulting in tremendous price pressures, would be in the interest of all optical component/system suppliers. There might be an expectation of a lower number of participants anyway given that some of them may pause to see if 1600ZR is feasible within a satisfactory period (please see: https://lnkd.in/e8JTmpb3). Additionally, although Meta had unexpectedly come up with plans to be a big buyer of 800ZR (please see: https://lnkd.in/e8V9N5RF), fibeReality has learned that there will also be an especially healthy amount of purchasing involving 800ZR+ pluggables – that makes sense, with a re-architecture of its optical network. The ZR+ would inherently offer a higher margin to Marvell, as the hypersclalers generally have not tended to desire that gear. While Amazon was an exception with 400ZR+ -- and would be anticipated to be interested in 800ZR+ -- fibeReality is unaware of any firm plans for that device by the customer at this time. Turning again to Ciena and 400ZR (please see: https://lnkd.in/exCFY4bQ), there could be a simple reason for its lack of substantial penetration -- a decision by the vendor to avoid treating the device as a loss leader. With 800ZR, there may be a greater chance of resulting in an acceptable margin for the firm.

There was a time not so long ago that Microsoft and Intel Corporation were both atop the tech world. Microsoft built its hugely profitable Windows operating system over the years to work on computers that used Intel’s chips, and Intel designed new chips to run Windows (hence “Wintel”). bit.ly/4aSSvDu The system fueled the leading tech product of the 1990s, the personal computer. Microsoft’s Bill Gates became a celebrity wonk billionaire, and Intel CEO Andy Grove was Time’s 1997 Man of the Year. Since then, their paths have diverged sharply. Microsoft in 2000 was the world’s most valuable company, and after losing that distinction for many years, it’s No. 1 again. Intel was the world’s sixth most valuable company in 2000 and the largest maker of semiconductors; today it’s No. 69 by value and No. 2 in semiconductors by revenue, far behind No. 1 TSMC (and in some years also behind Samsung Electronics).

"True Intel MPI Story" by Alexander Supalov Part 12 Chapter 3: “We’re in the Money” Due diligence and other things being done in background, Ince – our admin – is running around puffing, while Intel lawyers – these in full business attire, of course – go around and count chairs, heads, and run thru the contracts. Days come and go, and finally, the date of September 12, 2003 is set as the start of our official tenure at Intel Corporation at the Cologne Software Lab (CGSL). As usual, that day I come to the office long before 9 am, somewhat earlier than most of my colleagues. As I sit down to continue on a report dedicated to the options we have to implement the future “Flexible MPI”, as we came to call it, someone passes by the door of my office. I sit alone in a two-seater room; Georg is not in yet. I turn around and see a keen, sharp carven face of an older man I don’t know. I come out; we shake hands. This is our new boss, Richard Wirt, head of the SSG – Software and Solutions Group, General Manager (GM), Vice President (VP) and such. We chat for quite a while about MPI, parallelism, compilers, and Russia. Richard wants to tap the vast resources over there – in fact he’s pushing the corporation that way – and is not content with what he is getting back from the lab in Nizhniy Novgorod. I tell him he should go for big university cities, like Moscow, Sankt Petersburg, and Novosibirsk, where there’s abundance of highly qualified people, despite apparently higher cost of labor. A few months on, Intel opens labs in the said cities on Richard’s prompting. Man, I made a difference! I feel really impressed by such a high level guy being so sharp technically, and still managing to become a GM. This must be a good company for a man like me, I think. I feel like fish in water from the very first day on, and am kept constantly busy by the ongoing work on the aforementioned studies and writing the reports, and so I kind of miss that among the excitement of the new servers coming in droves, the construction being planned and executed, and my being able to save at least one bit of our prior work from the claws of Fujitsu’s by presenting and publishing a paper on the shared memory lockfree collective operations at the EuroPVM/MPI conference which we came to sponsor in the later years – I kind of miss that some of my colleagues sulk and depress as the time is flying by. Things come to head when Frank and Georg come into our shared office and start, as they would, discuss their work on the new analyzer graphical interface at length, disregarding my being busy with the report. I ask them to please go to the conference room and let me focus on my deliverables, as we call them now. A fairly innocent, if firmly pronounced request leads to a small explosion of Frank’s and Georg’s who leave muttering something resembling “prima ballerina” or so. (to be continued)

Will Hock Tan eventually kill the #NIC business? Broadcom announced a #400G #RoCE / #RDMA #NIC that is not differentiated from the NVIDIA #ConnectX-7 that sampled 2 YEARS AGO! Broadcom may be betting the rumored delay of #ConnectX-8 800G NIC signals NVIDIA focusing development on the #SuperNIC / #DPU #BlueField which competes with Marvell Technology, AMD, and Intel Corporation. No one else has announced a 400G bare bones NIC. Regardless, Broadcom doesn't support businesses that are #2 in the market, and it may be the first time Broadcom is clearly behind a competitor that is bigger and stronger. NVIDIA is the first #semiconductor company to have more leverage than Broadcom.

Sixteen years at Broadcom. Still that same fanboy, striving to learn every moment. To make an impact every moment. A conversation with a random stranger this week also reminded me what a journey it has been. When I started at Broadcom in 2008, we were in many #broadband devices in the market, and had a broad portfolio. But when friends, family and strangers asked where I worked, it was often a painful conversation. Here is how they went- Them: Where do you work? Me: Er..Broadcom Them: Qualcomm? Wow, that’s a great company. Me: Well, no. B-R-O-A-D-C-O-M. We do chips for your cable modems and also Wi-Fi for your laptops Them: Oh OK. [Mind voice: Whatever!] This week, it was very different. This non-techie stranger, in the course of a conversation asked me where I work. I nonchalantly said, “Broadcom” and waited for the invariable follow-up response. But then, pat came a very different reply. “Broadcom is really broad, right. And aren’t you the guys that acquired VMWare.” “Yes, yes”, I said, desperately trying to record and replay the conversation in my head. I was in euphoria. I couldn’t have asked for a better “gift” as I approached “Sweet 16” here. It said a lot about how far we have come as a company, and as a brand.
