🌟 Reflecting on last week's GC Collective retreat, one of the group's takeaways was the realization that leadership is indeed a journey, not a destination. While our legal training taught us analytical thinking, and a keen eye to detail, effective leadership demands a different set of skills -ones that encompass broader perspectives, strategic vision, and the ability to navigate ambiguity. Recognizing that our legal training doesn't shape us into strong leaders is the first step in our leadership journey. Self-reflection becomes our compass on this journey. It's about honestly assessing ourselves, identifying our strengths and weaknesses, and actively seeking out opportunities for growth. Only by doing so can we bridge the gap between legal expertise and effective leadership. ➡️ Interested in elevating your leadership with other General Counsel / CLOs ? For all of us who are leaders, management and future leaders. Feel I need to share a quote from the owner of the famous Savannah Bananas baseball team, he said something that really resonated with me. “In addition to how we hire, once you join us, we do not believe in training. We believe in coaching, teaching, mentoring and educating and not the typical language of training within our company. Dogs are trained, people are coached and are educated on the company and the culture.”-Jesse Cole , Owner Savannah Bananas. I think this is the best way to go thru life and interactions not only with our team members but in everyday life. Remember those who work for us are not our subordinates but are our fellow team members. Who are here to play a vital role in the organizations ability to accomplish its desired goals and growing a culture of respect and excellence. (If you don’t know the Savannah Bananas, YouTube them and you will be amazed.)

This speaks volumes! I believe as a leader you should have solid knowledge of what your people do at least a few levels down. I had a boss that was a VP/Director that would come and sit and do my job. I was told, it was for grounding. There was also an open door policy where if we wanted to know more about what he knew the opportunity to shadow him or a colleague was offered. I also believe that individuals who lack specific skills within a job description should not be excluded. Teaching and training is how a lot of Leaders with C-suite titles landed where they are today. Have a Great Friday. https://lnkd.in/g9GZx_rG

Every leader possesses unique strengths and abilities. However, as top-tier leaders, it is our duty to effectively communicate the organization's values and vision to the entire team. This allows both current and future leaders to ensure their natural talents align with the company's mission. Doing so helps establish a culture that supports the development and growth of every organization member, from the highest to the lowest levels. Failure to implement this can lead to a significant risk of failure and chaos, particularly during moments of weak leadership at any level.
