Maik's journey with Avebe began in 2000 when his farm started supplying potatoes to our Dallmin location. He says: "While we already cultivated potatoes, the transition to starch potatoes had several new benefits. So as a self aware omnivore, would I try cultivated meat? YES ABSOLUTELY. Why? Well i suppose the answer is simple for me, us humans are terrible creatures & have done our level best to destroy our ecosystem. We need to change what we do, how we do, where we do & when we do..... There is no one silver bullet, it will take many to undo / repair what we have done. A farmer in Nebraska, USA had won the state fair 4 times in a row with his top quality corn. Nobody had ever done that before. So the local newspaper sent someone out to interview him. The reporter asked," What is your secret? Do you use a special corn seed?" The farmer said," Absolutely. I develop my own corn seed and that's an important aspect of it." "Well then, that's your secret" said the reporter," you plant a type of corn that's different from that of your neighbour?" "No, I also give it to my neighbour" said the farmer. "You give it to your neighbour? asked the reporter," Why in the world would you give your award-winning corn to your neighbour?" The farmer said, "Well you have got to understand how corn is pollinated. It pollinates from neighbouring fields and if you have got fields around you that don't have this top quality corn, your field is not going to grow top quality corn either. But if my neighbour field has the really strong corn, then I have awesome corn and that's how I have won at the Nebraska state fair the last 4 years in a row. Thus we can help other people and be helped in return. To gain something we must learn to give first and it demonstrates how a single positive action can create a chain reaction of benefits. This story provides lessons about cooperation, interconnectedness, generosity and the benefits of contributing positively to the well-being of others. Today, farmers have to make proper genetic decisions to improve profitability and the return on their farms. However, most beef bull seedstock providers either provide too little data or too much data. This has made buying the best bull very difficult. Every bull is good on some traits and weak on others. The challenge is figuring out how each of those traits is going to impact your bottom line. Back in 2005, Leachman Cattle of Colorado decided that they didn’t want to guess anymore. As a partner of Leachman’s we too had been working with various indexes over the years but the goal was to have one number that sorted the bulls on their bottom line impact – so taking into account both the production/income and the cost of that production. That brought about $Profit on all bulls they and we sell plus other indexes depending on what the bull is being used for. Furthermore, we are basing almost all of our own selection decisions and investment on $Profit for our beef cow farmers. With the cost to environment and animal welfare, this has to be the way forward. Animal protein without slaughter, without endless impact to the environment and still, for those desperate for a steak, the choice. Livestock farming is already precarious financially. This has to be an industry changing technology and will surely render it no longer viable in the midterm future on such a vast scale - used only for cell production in the future.
