How can cutting down healthy trees into rivers be nature restoration? We explain why this makes sense in our new video tackling river restoration with Bristol Avon Rivers Trust on the River Chew. In their ‘natural’ state, rivers are dynamic and not afraid to get a little messy. Sadly, many UK rivers have undergone huge alterations over the years, which has impeded or totally removed natural processes and all the wonderful dynamism that comes with it. With this in mind, we’ve been working with BART to reinstate natural river dynamics on the River Chew. There numerous opportunities to improve this particular river, but for now we’re starting by injecting more woody debris back into the system. See the three different methods we’re using and learn how they will create new habitats, being the catalyst for greater river biodiversity! Thanks for watching! https://lnkd.in/d2qG9AwP

Apparently there was a familiar face on CBC News tlast night. You can see him being a nerd in the video here: https://lnkd.in/etjE2RrG Could have at least combed his hair a bit better... 🙄 More seriously, linking jellyfish blooms to climate change is hard to do. Lion's mane jellies (the purple ones that sting) come ashore in large numbers in our area pretty much every year, albeit usually a bit later in the year. Many jellyfish species also appear to exhibit long-term cyclical blooms, so directly linking this event to warming waters is difficult (https://lnkd.in/e-5cYqBB). That said, the northwest Atlantic Ocean is insanely warmer than usual, and has been since March, 2023 (https://lnkd.in/eSh3eztA). Having studied the effects of climate change on marine species since 2011, it makes me a bit uneasy just how much higher water temperatures in the northwest Atlantic are right now, particularly given that they've been this high for over a year. So, while we can't say for certain that this seemingly larger-than-usual bloom in Charlottetown Harbour is a consequence of climate change, we can say that climate change is and will continue to have effects on marine life in our neck of the woods. #marinebiology #climatechange #jellyfish Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada

Small, but mighty. 💪 These little fish are key players in the marine food web. 🐟🕸️ But there is more to their story... ⏳Their burrowing behaviors play an important role in sediment mixing, which is key to creating and maintaining sandy marine habitats. To understand the potential impacts of sand harvesting, we partnered with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to develop sustainable practices that safeguard these vital fish. 🛡️ Learn more: https://ow.ly/pi1950SyXcp

Did you know that forests play a vital role in keeping our soil fertile and healthy? These lush green havens act as natural guardians, protecting and enriching the soil through their intricate root systems and canopy cover. Plantations and forested areas are nature’s erosion control measures, mitigating soil loss and ensuring that precious nutrients remain available for plant growth. So, next time you’re out in nature, take a moment to appreciate the vital role that forests play in keeping our planet healthy.

Here are some interesting insights by Baltic MUPPETS into the unique characteristics that make #BalticSea #Mussels so special 💙 Don't underestimate their size, though! They still contain plenty of #protein, making them an important resource to utilize and #valorise, for example, by using them for feed applications like pet food 😺 🐶 Read more about the state of #MusselFarming in the Western Baltic here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dRTfxPuZ
🐚 In todays #Musselmonday we take a look at the size of #BalticSea mussels. Why are they so small? 🌊 #Bluemussels are originally a salt water species, adapted to live in marine waters. The Baltic Sea is #brackish, in-between fresh and salt water, and the salinity decreases eastward. 😵 The mussels have adapted to handle this, however, it puts a lot of #stress on them as they have to actively pump in salt to maintain a salt-level in which their metabolism functions. 📏 This makes their growth slow down, as they spend more energy on simply staying alive. ❗ And size matters! Read more on a previous workshop held by Baltic MUPPETS in the Blue Mission Banos Project #MissionArena in Gothenburg here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dRTfxPuZ
