Empowering Women in Tech through Parity 🚀 In the ever-evolving landscape of the tech world, women have consistently faced barriers hindering their full recognition and participation. Although there have been remarkable strides, gender disparities continue to persist in the industry, stifling innovation and limiting potential. In 2023, the ratio of women in leadership positions dropped by 10%, accounting for only 32.2% (Forbes). However, organizations such as Parity are dedicated to promoting female inclusion, catalyzing change and fostering environments where women can thrive. Through targeted initiatives, networking events, and an amazingly written newsletter (Fern O’Shaughnessy), Parity continues to spotlight women in leadership and promote inclusivity. Working with some amazing women in leadership (Kesi Johnson, Elle Baker, Carla Merante) has shown me that diversity isn't a buzzword; it's a necessity. So here's to the women who prove those statistics wrong, the organizations that lift them up, and the future that we're building together. 💗

As we celebrate International Women's Day today, I've been reflecting on the various reactions I've seen towards companies sharing their initiatives and spotlighting their women employees. It's no secret that some of these posts can feel a bit off or even tone-deaf at times. But I also think that we don't know what every single company does behind the scenes. I come from a field that is considered female-dominated, yet I still found myself in a toxic work environment. In a situation where I was underpaid (and overworked!). In a career that is designed to limit growth opportunities unless I chose to leave the classroom. Now I’m part of a *very* male-dominated industry, but, at my company, I've experienced a notable shift. Here, there's genuine appreciation for contributions, ample growth opportunities, better compensation, improved work-life balance, and overall, better treatment. So, yeah, it’s easy to criticize companies for what some may view as “merely spotlighting” their women employees without considering their actions to close gender gaps. But we don’t know everything. And today, I’d rather celebrate those companies that are actively working towards gender equality, even if they don't explicitly list all their efforts. After all, I believe that no matter what a company posts, there will always be someone ready to criticize. Happy International Women's Day! As the founder of Spanx, she revolutionized the shapewear industry and continues to empower women with her entrepreneurial spirit. Indra Nooyi: Former CEO of PepsiCo, Nooyi is a trailblazer in the corporate world. Under her leadership, PepsiCo focused on sustainability and healthy living initiatives while consistently delivering strong financial performance. Ursula Burns: As the former CEO of Xerox, Burns made history as the first Black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. Her visionary leadership and commitment to diversity and inclusion have left an indelible mark on the business world. Gwynne Shotwell: As the President and COO of SpaceX, Shotwell is leading the charge in revolutionizing space travel and exploration. Her expertise and leadership have been instrumental in SpaceX's success. Anne Wojcicki: Founder and CEO of 23andMe, Wojcicki is revolutionizing personalized healthcare with her groundbreaking genetic testing company. She's empowering individuals to take control of their health and well-being through genetic insights. These incredible women are just a few examples of the countless female entrepreneurs and leaders making waves in every corner of the world. Empowering Our Daughters, Sisters, and Nieces: A Women's History Month Challenge This Women’s History Month, a guiding principle of my career resonates stronger than ever: “Have your Maverick moment—don’t just criticize the company; challenge it to improve.” It’s a call to action to advocate for positive change by saying, “We can be better than this.” Let’s strive to create workplaces where our daughters, nieces, and sisters not only want to work but are empowered to lead. I'm challenging my LinkedIn network to join me in making this vision a reality. Here’s how we can start: 1️⃣ Initiate Open Conversations: Let’s create spaces where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and feedback to foster inclusivity and equality. It's through these conversations that we can start to reimagine our workplace norms. 2️⃣ Launch Mentorship Opportunities: If your organization doesn't already have a mentorship program that supports the growth of women, start one. Mentorship is a powerful tool for empowerment, providing the next generation with the guidance and opportunities they need to excel. 3️⃣ Celebrate Our Diverse Talents: Make a conscious effort to recognize and celebrate the diverse contributions within your teams. It’s the variety of perspectives and experiences that enrich our workplaces and drive innovation. I'm personally committed to this challenge because I believe in a future where the workplace is as diverse, inclusive, and empowering as the world around us. Happy International Women's Day, a 🌐 global day honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women! This year's theme, "Inspire Inclusion," reminds us of the importance of fostering a sense of belonging, empowerment, and relevance for women. The marketing scene in the U.S. embodies this spirit of inclusion, as women continue to make remarkable strides. We now account for 60% of the industry, according to LinkedIn, and are making significant headway in leadership roles. 😀 59% of manager-level positions are held by women, and over half of Chief Marketing Officers are women, marking a significant increase from 47% in 2019. This rise of women in marketing is not a matter of numbers; it represents a shift in power dynamics. We are breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and leading the charge in creating a more equitable and inclusive industry. We have an innate ability to understand consumer insights and transform them into compelling and meaningful campaigns that make a true impact and stand out. We're super proud of our own squad of marketing mavens StandOut Authority. They're the brains behind our best werk, blending creativity with savvy strategy to make magic happen. Celebrating Women’s History Month In March, we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. It is a time to reflect on the incredible contributions of women throughout history, recommit ourselves to creating a more equitable future, and celebrate the incredible social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women worldwide. It is a call to action for each of us to support each other and the women in our communities. So What Can We Do? Here are a few ways to start: In the workplace: Sponsor female colleagues, challenge gender stereotypes in hiring and promotions, and advocate for equal pay. In our communities: Support women-owned businesses, mentor young women, and speak up against gender-based discrimination. Personally: Educate yourself about gender issues, reflect on your own unconscious biases, and raise your children to understand equality. Let's Make Every Day a Celebration of Women Women’s History month sparks the conversation, but true change comes from consistent action. Let's commit to making every day a day we support, empower, and celebrate women. In the AV industry where women are often underrepresented, the women in our team stand out as leaders, creatives, and technically savvy professionals, making significant contributions to our success.   Their voices and talents are vital to our industry's growth:   👩💻 Picture 1: Kaylee Heckford - Video Technician   The AV industry is very male-dominated, so starting out can be daunting. I'd say to young women aspiring to enter the industry to stay true to themselves and not feel like they have to change who they are to fit in. This is such a vast industry, there's a perfect place for everyone, so just showing an interest in learning will open so many doors and introduce you to some brilliant people and experiences.    🙋♀️ Picture 2: Abigail Clarke - Production Coordinator   We need more training and visibility for women from a much younger age so that they know there are options within technology and production. I have often felt underestimated in the industry due to my gender and age, which has motivated me to go above and beyond and prove people wrong. So please, make sure your voice is heard - don't be afraid to speak up. Be creative.   👩🌾 Picture 3: ⚡️Aura Popa ⚡️ - Marketing Manager   The AV industry may still echo a 'boy's club', but things are definitely changing. The most important work we do at 80six is touring the UK with Production Futures to inspire girls as young as 14 to choose our industry. We’re fortunate our leadership stands as allies, building a company culture that's inviting for women and actively supports their professional dreams. We can address workplace family planning without fear, request flexible working to sustain a better work-life integration, and access targeted training and mentorship to support us in leadership roles.     👩💼 Picture 4: Jenny Kenny - Office Manager   I’ve come across other companies in the AV field, similar to 80six, where women on the team feel equal and valued and play an important role in growing the business, which management recognises and values. So never doubt your ability. Bring forward your ideas; it’s great to have alternative viewpoints.
