At the June AI and the Commons community call, we discussed the heritage sector’s relationship to generative and analytical AI. Our guests, Dr Mathilde Pavis and Michael Weinberg, provided a short overview of how the heritage sector currently engages with AI technologies and argued that the fears surrounding the impact of AI should not cause cultural institutions to question their commitment to Open Access. ⚖️🤖 The second blog of #AI4BetterScience is out! Let's dig into the #EU "Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research" from the European Commission & European Research Executive Agency (REA). They are valuable resources for progressing the implementation of #GenerativeAI in research, but they leave room for a wide grey area... 📃 In short, the guidelines approach the question through a binary perspective: substantial and non-substantial. The problem? The innovative transformative usages fall between these two categories, opening up a large grey area. Exploring these usages and proposing a new paradigm is necessary to realise the full potential benefits and mitigate significant dangers to the quality of #science. 👇 Click on the link below to get the full story! 📆 Next, we will return to the fundamentals: How does generative AI work? #PhD #innovation #research #AI #ethics

How many organisations have actually stepped back, before making a ‘go’ decision on some AI use case, and considered whether the net cost on planetary boundaries is worth it? I’d love someone to share an example of a situation where the net cost on planetary boundaries led an organisation NOT to pursue an AI use case. Help me find one, please. #ecologicalethics #planetaryboundaries #ai #climateaction

I know there are a lot of AI skeptics out there. I'll let a historian give you a historical perspective on the science of evolution. We can't use the old time scale to think about the progress in AI. Will LLMs lead us to AGI? No. But are there any human beings out there who can compete against the current versions of LLMs in every task the LLMs can perform? Not a chance. In fact, I would say if you put a million of the smartest people on earth and have them compete against any LLMs on simple tasks, an LLM will beat the million smartest humans. That's the scale we have to think in. #llm #gai #ai #airevolution #yuvalnoahharari #historyofevolution https://lnkd.in/gh3WVnBJ

Yesterday on the final day of the AI Conference I was part of a panel titled 'the future of generative AI'. It is very hard to predict with certainity the future of the technology especially as it is still growing rapidly but we took a swing at it along side Moses Kemibaro Edna Karijo Nathan-Ross Adams Mwangi Kirubi moderated by Brian Omwenga Africa's and Kenya's role in the future shone as a thematic area of the panel as we spoke of the oppurtunities that we have to create a future for generative AI in Africa beyond consumption of the technology to its development and research all the way from the #infrastruture moving up the vertical. #ai #generativeai #aiconference

Welcome to the second installment of my series that aims to delve into the multifaceted topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). While the first article, "AI: The Possible End of Human-Centric History — Inspired by the Suleyman-Harari Debate," considered the possibility of AI usurping humanity's central role in the universe, this piece takes a decidedly more optimistic perspective. Here, we will explore the myriad ways AI promises to empower us, improve our quality of life, and usher us into a new age of unparalleled potential.
