I ran the engineering department of one of the leading PDF management companies and yet I made a rookie mistake with my CV - and it could happen to you too. I assumed my CV would be read just fine by Application Tracking Systems (ATS). After all, when previewed and printed, it looked fine. When you apply for a job, you typically have 3 options: 1. Type it manually 2. Connect your LinkedIn account 3. Upload it As I put great effort in editing my CV, I usually go for the third option. The other day however, I noticed that on Workday, all "ti" were replaced by *. So Executive became Execu*ve, and so on. Not really how I wanted to present myself :( Only some ATS show you a preview and/or let you edit what they have ingested. All others most probably got a messed up CV. Not great. If, like me, you typically share your CV as a PDF, you want to ensure that it can be converted to text without errors. You can either upload your CV to one of many "PDF to Text" conversion services online or download tools you can run locally. I suggest you also test it on different providers, as I got different results based on the underlying SDKs used. In my case, I fixed it by changing LibreOffice "Export to Pdf" default settings to use PDF/A, which is an ISO Standard for long-term archiving of PDF files, which should help reduce the chances of a conversion error. Ensuring a CV is fully compatible with major ATS is another matter, but now I am reasonably sure it can be converted into text without errors. ps: this obviously applies to all documents, not just CVs.

Have you ever had someone create a skills matrix and offer that on request like they would a reference list? LinkedIn offers a skills system complete with a vouch subsystem. I was considering creating a web-based skill matrix to answer questions about what types of skills I had and at what level I would categorize my proficiency (familiar, proficient, expert, etc).
