This Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we have something special to share! GitHub made a movie about our founders, Mick and Jamie, and the story of not only NVDA, but OSARA. Two life-changing open-source projects actively providing access, and employment, to blind people around the world. Contributing code is not the only way to engage with the open source community. (although writing code is the major quantifiable metric) There are other ways too: - pick out the library you are using (or it's further dependent component) which is of interest (mostly the bit which might have caused you some trouble) - engage with the community (most projects have a slack, discourse community, mail groups, github discussions section) etc. You can help out fellow developers (replying to their issues, sharing your experience of how you had to tweak to that one parameter in the library to get the result you wanted etc) #foss #opensource #opensourcecommunity

Summer is almost here, and with it comes the opportunity to contribute to open source software! So, what is open source software? A software which is publicly accessible with its source code, to which anyone can make changes by adding or modifying some functionality or features. Sounds cool? By contributing to these softwares, you are not only adding a value to the system but also learning some key skills like technical expertise, collaboration, teamwork as people from different parts of the world are contributing to the same system. GirlScript Summer of Code is a perfect opportunity for beginners to enter into the world of open source. It's a 3-month program where you would be assigned a mentor under which you'll be contributing to the projects depending upon your expertise. I have joined the program as a contributor, if you want to do so too, head over to their page as applications are still open. Let's see what lies ahead:) #openSource #GSSoC24

An increase of 1,600 contributors to open source projects in the UK, in the last 6 months. This figure reflects those whose code contributions have been accepted (commits). This increase of 1600 in 6 months reflects against the growth of 1,700 in the previous 12 months. The data indicates a strong increase across all levels of commits to open source projects from the UK, although, at the top level of a committer, who has had 1,000 plus commits accepted, the growth rate is unsurprisingly significantly smaller, but still with relatively good growth. Read the recent report to understand the OpenUK ask on Skills, to build more contributors to open source projects from the UK through OpenUK's Community Inclusion Program. https://lnkd.in/eUvbNwyk Thanks to GitHub and Runa Capital for their support on this data. To get involved mail us at mailto: admin@openuk.uk #theopenmanifesto #openuk #opensourcesoftware #opensource

2moThat's wonderful news! NV Access Limited has truly made a significant impact with NVDA, enabling students at Srimanta Sankar Mission Blind School in Nagaon, Assam to become digitally literate and learn new skills at our newly established computer lab .This initiative not only opens up a world of opportunities for these students but also demonstrates the power of accessible technology in transforming lives. Kudos to everyone involved in making this possible!
