“Working: What We Do All Day” has been sitting in my Netflix Top Picks for weeks now. I guess it’s a timely coincidence that I watched it during the liminal space in between jobs. And I’m glad that I did. The docuseries walks us through the lives of people on all points of the labor spectrum—from a home care aide seeking the hope of meaningful work on a $9/hr wage to union workers at the famed Pierre Hotel in Manhattan, all the way up to CEOs of these same organizations (whose actual day to day is still unclear from the film). I’ve certainly been more reflective about my own job search and have had several reframes about what it means to work and why I do it. And yet even with my own fate still to be decided, I can’t ignore the impending reality of the millions of jobs in America to be replaced by automation and AI within the next decade—women and people of color to be impacted most. At this point I have more questions than solutions. The promise of positive impact reaching our economy, especially here locally in South Carolina, where manufacturing alone is only 13% of our workforce and brings in $37 billion of labor is exciting. There’s time to act to protect our most vulnerable communities. Will we be on the right side of history?

For the first time since the inception of our Compensation Best Practice Report, over half of organizations are actively training managers on how to discuss compensation with their teams. This marks a significant shift, as 51% of companies recognize the importance of transparency in pay discussions. We explored pay communications in the latest episode of the Comp and Coffee podcast. The conversation around pay is not just about numbers—it's a fundamental aspect of the employee-employer relationship. Pay transparency goes beyond mere figures—it's about fairness, understanding, and respect. Yet, astonishingly, only about half of organizations have equipped their managers with the skills to navigate this crucial dialogue. Pay is at the heart of job satisfaction, engagement, loyalty, and the overall retention process. Without clear communication, even the most thoughtful compensation strategies can fall flat. Employees need to know that their pay is fair, and that their employers value their contributions. Investing in pay practices is only half the battle. The true value is realized when these practices are effectively communicated to the workforce. As we look to the future, we expect that pay communications will evolve into a role of increasing importance in the modern workplace. This isn't just a trend, it's the future of fostering a more engaged and informed workforce. As HR leaders, fostering a workplace that values fairness is paramount. Let's talk about Pay Equity - a cornerstone of an inclusive and thriving organization. 🌐 Pay Equity is the principle of eliminating gender and other biases in compensation, ensuring that individuals are paid fairly for their work, irrespective of gender, race, or other non-job-related factors. Here's how you can do your part: 1️⃣ Regular Audits: Conduct regular pay audits to identify and rectify any disparities. Transparency is key! 2️⃣ Educate Your Team: Empower your team with knowledge on pay equity. Awareness fuels change. 3️⃣ Performance-Based Compensation: Link compensation to performance. Recognize and reward merit, ensuring a level playing field. 4️⃣ Equal Opportunities: Promote equal opportunities for growth. Mentorship and career development should be accessible to all. 5️⃣ Communication is Key: Foster open dialogue about compensation. Encourage employees to discuss concerns without fear of retribution. Let's collectively strive for a workplace where fairness and equity is the standard. 💼✨ Need help getting started? Reach out to me. Equal pay for equal work versus equal pay for work of equal value: is there a difference? This was just one of many topics that the Aon team shared during a recent compensation roundtable in Seattle. In today’s workplace, comp practitioners are expected to help their organizations navigate numerous regulatory complexities and ambiguities whether it’s compliance with the EU Pay Transparency Directive or preparing for the impact of AI on the future or work. Grateful for partners like Andrea De Ville, Gisou Amirani Mehrabanzad, and Daniel Paterson, who make it easy to navigate these issues and create a safe space for comp practitioners to discuss challenges and solutions. (Thank you, Daniel, for bringing us together.) And thankful for the opportunity to meet in-person Stefan Gaertner, who’s always been immensely helpful in answering many questions I’ve had on pay equity over the years and making complex data topics easy to understand (he has also published some thought-provoking white papers on these issues worth checking out.) #compensation #totalrewards #culture #humanresources #hr #leadership #talent #paytransparency #employeeengagement
