"Democracy is a letter to the editor. Democracy is the score at the beginning of the ninth. It is an idea which hasn’t been disproved yet, a song the words of which have not gone bad. It’s the mustard on the hot dog and the cream in the rationed coffee." I love this essay by E.B. White and reread it every 4th of July.
Your poetic depiction of democracy is beautiful, but it seems to overlook a crucial point: democracy, without the active participation and permission of the people, is just a collection of words. True democracy requires more than just ideas and metaphors; it demands real, tangible actions and permissions from those it seeks to represent 🤐
Democracy is an open-ended, iterative game. Democracy is how we get rid of bad leaders. https://youtu.be/X5u-kHkUZYY
“Democracy is an idea which hasn’t been disapproved yet”.
Nicholas Thompson these words remain woven into the US 🇺🇸 constitution and the rule of law. However, they are seldom mentioned in today’s conversations, because nowadays leaders have no grounding nor principles. It should remain a privilege, with the old habits of never forgetting where everyone once came from.
I am lucky enough to have my great grandfather's handwritten diaries from the 1940s. It's eerie to read my own questions about the state of society written nearly a century ago. Thanks for the share!
Nicholas Thompson love this, Nicholas! E.B. White's take on democracy is super timeless. Such a great reminder of what it truly means, tbh. Thanks for sharing https://missfitchicago.com/
