Leadership Inspiration 101: Appreciation
As you head into 2024, brands and leaders will continue to face expected and unexpected headwinds.
As a result, a committed team will lead the day.
While King Henry isn't a coach, he is a leader by simply exercising one winning principle, sharing appreciation.
A leader, you may be asking how does this apply to me?
It applies to you if you lead people...
1. When was the last time your thanked your team for their efforts? (Annually during the holidays doesn't count 😀).
2. What is the frequency that you share thanks with your team, others throughout your organization, your external partners and most importantly your consumer?
We live in a world of data, performance metrics, etc. and yet I wonder how many leaders reading this actually track their appreciation/thank yous? How many leaders is this "second nature" to and don't need to track?
One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelo,
"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
Imagine how the people that King Henry called out at the press conference that has since gone viral feel today? I am willing to bet, he didn't just say Thank You today, he shows his thanks everyday and as a result made them feel special and a part of the team.
That is what great leaders do!

Football and Forensics (Part 66): Independence Day edition
Connecting law to July 4 is relatively simple.
July 4, 1776: At its essence, the Declaration of Independence was a legal document. Not just any legal document but a criminal indictment. The DoI submission of “Facts to a candid world” amounts to the Overt Acts section of a criminal conspiracy charge. This is what England did, and this is how they did it (the “Execution” or “Means and Manner” of the scheme).
Having won our freedom, we adopted the Constitution as a document that fulfilled the promise of the DoI and codified the principles of equality under the law.
But we had much work to do.
On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass spoke of his admiration for the founders, their bravery, their ideals, and their brilliance – in the midst of his disappointment about the distance that remained between free people and slaves: “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Indeed. The law as espoused could not abide of this contradictory evil.
He would later say that the Constitution, “construed in the light of well-established rules of legal interpretation,” must be “wielded in behalf of emancipation” as “a glorious liberty document.”
We would go to war with ourselves over that principle that is so important to the laws of a free nation of free people – “All men are created equal…” Even after the war, we struggled for another century to fulfill the promise of those ideals under the law. For black citizens. For women. For others marginalized by our hard discriminatory hearts.
The law and principles that undergird it serve many purposes – one of which is to teach about what is important, in the hopes of pricking and changing the hearts of the people. It is a rally point that unites disparate people groups not behind the fleeting things of this world or superficial physical connections and similarities -- but rather under universal truth about our equal intrinsic value as human beings and common unifying features as a nation.

So whither football?
January 27, 1991: Buffalo Bills vs New York Giants (Super Bowl XXV – 25 for the Roman numeral challenged). It’s a bit more difficult to make a football connection to July 4. After all, it isn’t football season yet (sadly). But my mind immediately went to Whitney Houston’s rendition of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl played roughly a week after the Gulf War began. About as unifying of a patriotic performance that I have ever seen.

Tomorrow is the 4th of July, or more properly, Independence Day. AUSA #StevenNeff (who is uniquely qualified to speak from a legal perspective) provides a great perspective on its meaning to all Americans.
I would add this insight : the American Revolution was a rebellion AGAINST big and oppressive government. It was NOT in support of tyranny, high taxation and the suppression of individual rights and freedom. And it was a clear statement that all just governments and leaders must be subordinate and surrendered to Almighty God.
