Join me for #DeepDay2023 on 16th November to celebrate the critical role our deep ocean plays in making life on earth possible. This year, more then ever, it is evident that the Deep Sea is facing a multitude of threats. #BottomTrawling leaves a lasting impact on delicate #seamounts. As the net drags along the seafloor, living habitats in its path are crushed, ripped up, or smothered as the seabed is turned over. Meanwhile, #DeepSeaMining is emerging as a major concern. For minor economic gains, the mineral extraction or excavation would potentially disrupt ecosystems that have evolved over millennia. Right now, crucial negotiations are ongoing at International Seabed Authority - Kingston, where countries are determining the future of our common heritage: the ocean floor. As we join forces to #DefendTheDeep, let's not forget the importance of informed, science-based decision-making. Ahead of #DeepDay, visit bit.ly/deepday to gain deeper insights into the deep ocean and how you can be part of the solution. #OceanConservation #DSCC #DSM #ISA28 #ISA

🌍 Happy World Earth Day! 🌱 Today, as we commemorate World Earth Day under the theme "Planet vs. Plastics," let's take a moment to reflect on the critical issue of plastic pollution and its impact on our environment. It's a stark reminder that our planet is facing a grave challenge, but it's also an opportunity to come together and take action. Plastic pollution significantly threatens ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Plastics have infiltrated every corner of our planet, from our oceans and rivers to our cities and forests. But we can't afford to stand idly by. We must rise to the challenge and confront this crisis head-on. This Earth Day, let's renew our commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable alternatives. Whether it's saying no to single-use plastics, supporting plastic-free initiatives, or advocating for policy changes, each of us has a role to play in protecting our planet. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution and ensure a healthier, cleaner future for generations to come. #WorldEarthDay #PlanetVsPlastics #PlasticPollution #Sustainability #EnvironmentalProtection 🌿🌎

Just listened to this conversation between Rachel Donald from Planet Critical and ecologist William Rees. Bill kicks off explaining humans use all available resources and alter the habitats they occupy. Just like any other animal species I would add. Obviously the problem is that we humans wield great power, in particular since we discovered fossil fuels. I think the trick is to find and maintain a dynamic ecosystem equilibrium. This, in my opinion, is an overlooked responsibility of homo sapiens in the anthropocene. What I learned from permaculture is that we can consciously seek this equilibrium if we choose to do so. Rees looks at the mainstream and finds it hard to imagine “we” will move beyond the business as usual status quo. Rachel, representing the younger generation, rightfully asks who is “we” and points out she has many friends who consciously choose not to have children, not to fly etc. Both seem to agree cultural change is inevitable, either through bio-sphere collapse or violent revolution (Bill’s feared scenarios) or voluntarily (Rachel’s hope). No doubt, interesting times. Let's see what 2024 will bring.

🌏🕘 Last week marked another global celebration of Earth Hour, an event that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour as a statement of commitment to our planet. However, the journey towards a healthier planet extends far beyond the one-hour lights-off event. Here are some actions we can take to maintain momentum in our commitment to the Earth: 1️⃣ Reduce energy consumption: incorporate energy-saving habits into daily life, like using energy-efficient appliances, reducing water heating expenses, and maximizing natural light. 2️⃣ Sustainable transportation: opt for walking, biking, carpooling, or public transport to reduce carbon emissions. If you don't live in Hong Kong and need a car, consider electric or hybrid vehicles as a greener alternative. 3️⃣ Educate and advocate: share knowledge and raise awareness about environmental issues. Support policies and initiatives that aim to reduce carbon footprints and protect the environment. #earthhoureveryday #earthhour2024 #bethedo
⏰🌎How will you spend Earth Hour 2024? In addition to switching off your lights on Saturday March 23 at 8:30 p.m. local time, Earth Hour is also a chance to spend 60 minutes doing good for the planet while doing something you love. Will you reconnect with nature? Learn something new about our planet? Or maybe you're still looking for a good idea, in which case check out our partners at Count Us In! #earthhour #climateaction #sustainability

An inspiring article with an interesting question: Are we, as citizens of Earth, negligibly insignificant in the vastness of the universe or is our unique position even more of a mission and an obligation?

6 out of 9 planetary boundaries crossed. Now, if this does not take us to act, then what could be that? This is not about saving the planet, it’s about us. Planet would be fine. Simple act won’t be enough anymore, only systemic change would perhaps help. Regenerative would not be an option anymore. #boundaries #planet #human #civilization #sustainability #regenerative #climatechange https://lnkd.in/dpz7Wq6U
