Tomorrow is the day we've all been waiting for; the high-intensity, epic final clash between two power-packed oppositions. For us, Indian cricket fans, it's a chance for revenge after the heartbreak of the 2003 final against Australia, a full 20 years ago. As much as it is important to win the World Cup so is it to remember that the players on both teams are human beings with emotions and feelings. While it's natural to feel passionate and invested in the outcome of the match, it's never okay to direct hatred or abuse towards the players, regardless of the result. In the past, we've seen how Indian cricket players have been targeted and abused by fans after losing in world cup matches. This kind of behavior can have a serious impact on the players' mental health and well-being, and can create a toxic environment that is harmful for everyone involved. As spectators, it's our responsibility to support our team and show our passion for the game in a positive and respectful way. We can do this by cheering for our team, celebrating their successes, and showing empathy and compassion when they face challenges or setbacks. We must also remember that cricket is just a game, and that the players are doing their best to represent their country and make us proud. 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 I read an interview where Coach Rahul Dravid apparently told the board that the pitch was responsible for India's defeat in the World Cup finals. Honestly, I was a bit surprised. In his playing days, Dravid was someone who didn't cut any corners. In fact, he seemed to thrive when the situation was going against him. Moreover, after India lost the toss, Rohit Sharma said he would have batted first had he won, so losing the toss didn't matter. Yes, the pitch changed and didn't offer as much turn when India was bowling. Batting became easier in the second innings and India's spinners didn't have much to work with. But to blame the pitch is to turn a blind eye to India's weaknesses - like a middle order that didn't get going or players like Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer who didn't live up to their billing. In the post-match conference, Dravid said 240 was a total that required a couple of big partnerships, and Australia did that. The truth is India fell short in the finals. For some time now, they have not been able to muster their best game in key matches. In the 2023 World Cup, some of their win margins were scarcely believable. They reached the finals undefeated. It seemed as though the wind was blowing in their favor throughout. Australia knows how to win the big games. India seems to have lost the knack for that. So blaming the pitch seemed a little off. This means getting a desirable result means getting your type of pitch and winning the toss. But sports and life don't always go according to plan. As India’s phenomenal journey in the Cricket World Cup concluded, it stirred in me a memory, from the corridors of a premier business school interview for MBA admission back in 2001. The question posed to me was thought-provoking: "Should a developing country like India be playing cricket?" Back then, my response was framed through the lens of 'economic opportunity cost'. With the nation glued to cricket matches, particularly in an era devoid of the brisk T-20 format, the hours spent watching lengthy Test matches and one-day internationals seemed like a monumental loss of productive time. The calculation was straightforward – the number of viewers multiplied by the hours spent watching, equated to an astronomical sum of lost economic productivity. However, two decades later, as I reminisce about India's recent performance and the wave of emotions it stirred, I realize the dimension I overlooked in that interview room: the unifying power of cricket in India. This sport is far more than mere entertainment; it's a thread that binds our nation, bridging differences in religion, language, cuisine, and political views and some many more. In a country as multifaceted as India, cricket emerges not just as a game, but as a collective passion that fires up millions. It's perhaps the only arena where the entire nation pulses with a single rhythm, regardless of its diversities. Reasons: a) India along with Nepal & Pakistan are placed in Group A of the series; b) Nepal is definitely a weaker side and India can easily defeat them and earn 2 points; c) However, against Pakistan, which is a better side than Nepal, India can win and top the Group A table, earning 4 points.
