What league are you in? I started watching: “Welcome to Wrexham” this afternoon. And I’m hooked. I’ve commented before on the parallels between sports and business. And this show is packed full of them. It got me thinking about the leagues we’re in. Whatever your business or industry, I’ll bet you could place your company in a league table. In football terms, there’ll be a Premiership - the crème de la crème of firms at the top of their game - sucking in the “best” talent, investment, partnerships and opportunities. Then there’ll be levels below, from Championship through to National and further feeder leagues. The truth is, as a player, manager or owner; the top league doesn’t have to be where you play. Sure, it’s the goal. But the satisfaction (for me, anyway) comes from playing the game. I find it fascinating thinking about how teams change, needs change, skillsets change; at different levels. Top tier managers might fail trying to corral a lower-league team. Equally, some team members will be capable of levelling-up and sticking with a company as they scale up and are “promoted” through the levels. You might not give two hoots about football. But I think it’s important to know what league you’re in professionally. To know the strategies that may or may not work well for you. To have the right people on the team at the right time. And to know where you personally find your energy and thrive. For now: go on, Wrexham! #agencylife #football #growth

What does the end of the season mean for the sports performance recruitment market?? Whether they be Performance Analysts, Sports Scientists, Recruitment Analysts, Physios or Strength & Conditioning staff, the summer break is a period of change. Sometimes it can be down to teams over-performing and needing to build out departments and functions, or occasionally teams can go through restructures in the pursuit of better performance. We also see an increase in resignations that are tied in with end-of-season bonuses. The summer period is also the perfect opportunity for clubs to build innovative departments. For example over the past couple of seasons, we've seen an increase in the number of clubs that have dedicated Nutrition and Psychology teams. We’re anticipating significant growth in performance staff across all clubs. With the increasing number of pre-season (and possibly post-season) friendlies, there's a greater need for skilled professionals to help players navigate the packed fixture schedules. How are companies still promoting for seniority? It's like saying anyone who plays basketball for more than 5 years should be in the NBA. Just because someone had the same job for an arbitrary number of years, doesn't mean they are good at it. Butt in seat does not equal competency. After a rough weekend of games here in #Houston I just want to say the last team to make it to 3 consecutive World Series was the 98-2000 Yankees. In the final year they made it to the World Series they "only" won 87 games. Coincidence? Only time will tell. Day 25 of the #LinkedInSportsChallenge is to describe common pitfalls people encounter when entering sports and how to steer clear of them. I have two that come to mind. The first one is one I still struggle with is impatience. Sports as an industry can feel like there are expectations that year to year there should be some kind of ascension or advancement. When, in actuality it can take some time to learn the role, excel in the role, master the role, and then advance past the role. Patience is a virtue needed at time in sports because there are few full time roles that become available. The last one is the expectation that money will flow in once you get into sports. There is a potential to earn money in sports, don't get me wrong. However, if you believe that sports will be a one-way ticket to a bigger payday you might be in for a rude awakening. My first two years working in sports were part time roles that paid at or below minimum wage, if they were paid at all. Cheers to another week! This week I believe we secure our ticket to postseason and then we gear up for some good battles through October!

What does street hockey have to do with organizational culture? When I was a kid, many years ago, I played a lot of street hockey. It was so much fun. Being "picked" as we formed each team was our starting point. Once the teams were formed we quickly figured out our plays and positions. We each had different skills and styles of play. While we were playing we were totally focused on doing our best. Our goal (pun intended) was clear. Beat the other team! After the game finished, we discussed what went well, what we might do differently next game, and when we would play again. Today this memory came back to me. I started thinking about the parallel with today's work environment. We chose to play (autonomy), we played with friends (team dynamics), we knew the game (results), we respected each others abilities (diversity), we welcomed everyone to play (inclusion), and if someone got hurt we stopped to make sure they were OK (well-being). Imagine what our workplace would be like if we applied similar principles to our professional lives. Game on! #culture #teamwork #workplace
