In the second episode of series two of my podcast, I find myself back discussing AI. In looking for images to co_present my PHD assignment with AI, I came across an absence of black women in a large pool of AI tools. I was saddened by the amount of AI tools out there. There's a LinkedIn group called 'There's an AI for that'. AI tools for everything and very little black presence. Once again we will be left behind if we do not get involved now. Forget the fear of AI or the ethics or the worry etc, they will work themselves out. We are human beings, we always win. We are still at the start of this revolution and can get involved now. So I'm encouraging Black parents, teachers to get your young people in creating these tools and also black investors to invest in young black people who may want to get involved. Otherwise our grandchildren will be back here in 100 years making the same call about the absence of representation. https://lnkd.in/eCgr8RwS #AI #Artificialintelligrnce #representation #storytelling #ownership #identity

When Art meets Tech. The theme for US Black History Month 2024 is "African Americans and the Arts". As the use of AI-generated art soars, artists are using technology to give volume to conversations around race and bias. As one of their 100 Most Influential People in AI 2023, Time reported that Brooklyn-based Artist Stephanie Dinkins found "even AIs programmed to think like her seem unable to talk about race or discrimination or to conjure culturally specific references." artnet detailed that “Black artists using A.I. today have to work harder than their white counterparts to get results that they feel accurately represent them." So, how do we bring more diversity into this cutting-edge technology? "As AI developers, it's our responsibility to prioritize equity in our algorithms. We must be mindful of the potential harm that can result from biased decision-making." Our Chief Growth and Innovation Officer, Jamal Khan offers his reflections on the societal impacts of AI, and how as a society we should be mindful of the potential harm that can result from biased decision-making.
Reflecting on Black History Month, it's important to consider the societal impact of AI. While it has the potential to equalize systemic disparities, it could also deepen existing divides. As AI developers, it's our responsibility to prioritize equity in our algorithms. We must be mindful of the potential harm that can result from biased decision-making. Instances of automated systems misidentifying innocents as threats (through signature detection) are a clear example of this in modern war fighting. Unfortunately we are likely to hear more about the application of algorithms in war fighting and its devastating human toll in the coming months and years. These biases exist in systems and processes beyond war fighting and given their subtlety, often go unnoticed. Let's remember Marcus Aurelius's wisdom and prioritize the welfare of the community. Society thrives when it cares for all members. A 2019 study by Georgia Tech highlights the subtleties of algorithmic bias. It's encouraging to see large companies like Sony and Meta taking the issue of bias in computer vision and other types of "AI" systems seriously. I recall a couple of years ago when academic testing software was using facial recognition to verify test-taker identification and the feature had to be disabled due to its inability to recognize the faces of individuals with darker skin tones. More insidious examples of bias are showing up in areas such as predictive policing and AI-based criminal sentencing. While we can hope developers of these systems are able to eliminate or at least reduce bias, it is also incumbent on us as users to critically evaluate the answers the systems provide.
Computer vision systems are everywhere. But they are riddled with biases, and they’re less accurate when the images show Black or brown people and women. Two new papers by researchers at Sony and Meta propose ways to measure biases in computer vision systems so as to more fully capture the rich diversity of humanity. https://trib.al/HingugJ
These new tools could make AI vision systems less biased
