The Community Foundation is actively working to create a more inclusive community. In honor of #DisabilityPrideMonth, we gathered etiquette tips from @AccessForAll on how to properly interact with individuals with disabilities. Here are a few helpful suggestions. Please share with your circles. 🔹Treat people the way you want to be treated, first and foremost. ▪️Ask before you help, speak directly to the person with a disability, do not touch, pat, or grab them, assistive devices such as wheelchairs, white canes, and hearing aids (to name a few) are considered personal space, do not use or move without permission, do not assume that people with disabilities are willing to disclose their disability. Be open to requests for access or accommodation 🔹Use inclusive language. ▪️Person First, Disability Second: USE “person who uses a wheelchair NOT “wheelchair bound; confined to a wheelchair” ▪️Emphasize Accessibility: USE “accessible parking; accessible restroom NOT “handicapped parking; disabled restroom” ▪️Say Disability: NOT “differently-abled; challenged; handi-capapble; special needs” ▪️Avoid Negative Stereotypes: USE “person without a disability; non-disabled person NOT “normal person; healthy person” Together we can make an inclusive and welcoming community for all. #AccessForAll #CFSLOCO

Hey Politics, I'm reaching out to you with a plea straight from the heart of the disability community. We didn't choose to have disabilities, yet we often find ourselves sidelined in discussions and decisions that directly impact our lives. It's about time we changed that narrative. We're not asking for special treatment; we're asking for acknowledgment and respect. Imagine navigating a world where your needs are an afterthought, where simple tasks become Herculean challenges because the environment isn't accommodating. That's the reality for many in the disability community. But it doesn't have to be this way. Let's create a space where our voices are not only heard but valued. Let's sit down and have meaningful conversations about the barriers we face and how we can overcome them together. Let's prioritize inclusivity and accessibility in every policy decision, every urban planning project, every aspect of society. By truly listening to our concerns and making us a priority, you have the opportunity to usher in a new era of inclusivity and equality. So, what do you say, Politics? Ready to roll up your sleeves and make a real difference for the disability community?

#DisabilityPrideMonth is about celebrating persons with #disabilities and allowing those individuals the opportunity to live their lives out loud. Often, people think about a #disability as a medical diagnosis. Disability can be physical or mental, like cerebral palsy or bipolar disorder; common or rare, like chronic back pain or narcolepsy; visible or invisible, like Down syndrome or learning disabilities. Regardless, it’s important to remember that disability is more than just a condition. Rather, it is a part of one's identity. "Disability Pride" has been defined as accepting and honoring each person's uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity. Diversability 2023 D-30 Disability Impact List l Centering and elevating the voices of people living with disabilities and chronic illnesses l Trainer l Speaker l Consultant l Lived Experience Expert
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is ASKING for PUBLIC FEEDBACK, so they can understand the full scope of inequities that people with disabilities face. It's time for us, as members of the #DisabilityCommunity, to use our individual and collective voices to help steer the creation of the Federal Evidence Agenda on Disability Equity. If we choose not to take this "seat at the table" that we're being offered, our unique and oftentimes traumatic experiences with healthcare, employment, education, and more will go unheard. That would be an incredible disservice, not only to the disability community but to members of every community fighting for justice and equity. That being said, PLEASE SHARE this request with friends, neighbors, colleagues, teachers at all levels, family members, etc. Together, we can amplify the long-silenced voices from within the disability community. So... ♿ Be unashamed in sharing this request with everyone you know living with a disability. This is an opportunity for all of us to shape government priorities as they relate to the disability "agenda" in the U.S. ♿ Recognize that the federal website page for this opportunity is difficult to navigate. I still haven't figured it all out, but I did reach out to clarify a few things. If you see a need or hear a request, please help people with disabilities complete and submit their responses successfully. Our participation is critical. THANK YOU & LINK TO REQUEST: https://lnkd.in/gGhSd9y5 #Legislation #DisabilityInclusion #EyeLevel #EyeLevelWorks #IncluseThis

UNITI is wishing the community a Happy Pride Season! Did you know the Disability Community has a Pride flag? 🌟 Disability Pride Flag Explained 🌈 The Disability Pride Flag is a powerful symbol that celebrates the resilience, unity, and unique contributions of people with disabilities. Let’s break down its colors and meanings: 1. Green: Represents sensory disabilities. These include conditions affecting sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. It acknowledges the diverse experiences of those with sensory impairments. 2. Blue: Symbolizes emotional and psychiatric disabilities. Mental health challenges are often invisible but equally significant. The blue stripe stands for understanding, compassion, and destigmatization. 3. White: Stands for non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities. Many disabilities don’t manifest externally, making them harder to recognize. The white stripe emphasizes inclusivity and acceptance for all. 4. Gold: Represents neurodiversity. This includes conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. The gold stripe celebrates the unique strengths and perspectives of neurodivergent individuals. 5. Red: Signifies physical disabilities. From mobility limitations to chronic illnesses, the red stripe honors the strength and resilience of those navigating physical challenges. Remember, the Disability Pride Flag is a beacon of hope, acceptance, and solidarity. Let’s continue to raise awareness and advocate for a more inclusive world! 🙌🤝 #DisabilityPrideFlag #InclusionMatters #UNITIAwareness #UNITICelebrates Feel free to share this informative post and spread awareness! 📢🌟

This video shows a woman in a wheelchair navigating through her hotel room while explaining how various features of an accessible room are still not accessible for wheelchair users. Accessible hotel rooms often require additional adaptations and adjustments to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. This issue will not be fixed until hotels start consulting with people in wheelchairs to better understand and address accessibility needs. We received approval to post this video with the aim of raising awareness about the creator and the important topics they discuss. Video Credit: limpbroozkit/IG Ablr is a full-service disability inclusion organization, and our mission is to remove barriers for all people with disabilities. We do this by eliminating the digital divide, changing the mindsets of people and organizations, and creating pathways to employment. #DisabilityAwareness #InclusiveTravel #Accessibility

🔥 Question of the Day🔥: What determines whether someone with a disability can reach beyond the expected boundaries of their abilities and skills? This isn't just idle curiosity. The time you take to support someone with a disability can be transformative. 🌟 I am sure many have witnessed seeing people with disabilities grow in independence, skill abilities, career opportunities, living out a dream, and demonstrating a positive impact in the community with their disability. Even in the challenges of the journey, how have you affirmed, supported, and maintained an effective approach to reminding people of the potential to achieve their dreams and goals? Just live a winning disabled life. No, it’s about EMPOWERMENT and UNDERSTANDING. Your agreement, nodding of your head, raising thoughtful eyebrows and even responding acknowledge that it is a valid point of the supports someone provides 🤔 Your insights might be the key to unlocking an existing perspective in the disability sector. Using this platform helps spread awareness and discussion, not just waiting for special events to hear an answer. The wider community praises not just the person with a disability, but the families, supports, and community as well. Working together, we have the power to spark change. 🌐 This is an invitation to challenge the status quo. To contribute to a cause that's bigger than all of us. To make a difference.👊 So, go ahead and let your testimony be heard. 💬 #NDIS #disabilityproviders #supportcoordination #alliedhealth #disabilityawareness #Inclusion #serviceproviders #changemakers #empowerment #lookingbeyond Remember, every small step forward is a leap towards a better, more understanding world. 🌍
