India’s sprawling education system can benefit greatly from data collection and analysis — but also faces related challenges and risks like poor data privacy, outdated technology, and data fragmentation, according to our new research conducted with the Aapti Institute, and funded by USAID. The research, titled “Strengthening Data Ecosystems in Indian Schools,” explores how to responsibly leverage data like enrollment rates, student-teacher ratios, attendance, assessment results, and socio-economic information to shape education policies and interventions. The investigation was carried out over nine months by more than a dozen local experts, and spanned 10 states. Read more: https://mzl.la/4chFFif

India’s Education System Can Benefit from Proper Data Collection and Analysis India's education system is on the brink of a data revolution, as highlighted by recent research in this The Hindu article. The findings reveal a scenario ripe for transformation but full of challenges, from fragmented data collection to privacy concerns. Many schools grapple with the practicalities of data management. The digital divide, especially in rural areas, worsen these issues, leading to data gaps and skewed policies. The call for a centralized data agency and standardized processes is a step in the right direction. Investing in training for IT staff and incentivizing teachers for data-related tasks could pave the way for more accurate and secure data handling. As we strive for educational excellence, bridging these data gaps is crucial for informed decision-making and policy development. https://lnkd.in/g8v6jc_e #SchoolLeadership #DigitalDivide #PolicyReform *Source: UNESCO

Ensuring every student and school has a unique ID number is crucial for effective education management. It allows for accurate tracking of students in school registers, examination records, and national scholarship databases throughout their educational journey. The #2023GEMReport reported UNESCO Institute for Statistics data showing that only 54% of countries have implemented unique student ID numbers, with a mere 22% in sub-Saharan Africa. However, most countries have plans to introduce these systems soon. Implementing these systems presents challenges, including high costs, privacy concerns, and the risk of excluding marginalized populations. To leverage these technologies effectively, we must empower educators and policymakers with data skills, ensure data protection, and design user-friendly systems. ➡️ Explore more in the latest #WorldEducationBlog: https://bit.ly/4fdYiWE

🌟 UNESCO: "We must address challenges in education data" 🌟 The UNESCO Conference on Education Data and Statistics in Paris this week shed light on critical challenges facing the education sector, particularly in teacher data. Our CCO Markku Pelkonen took part in the conference and said afterwards: "It's time to confront these obstacles head-on and pave the way for transformative change." Here's a glimpse into the critical challenges identified during the event: 🔍 Low Coverage and Comparability Issues: The lack of standardised indicators and definitions hinders accurate assessment, leading to disparities in data quality across regions. Without a clear empirical definition of trained teachers and standardised methodologies, achieving meaningful comparisons becomes an uphill battle. 🎓 Unsatisfactory Conceptualisation: The absence of agreed-upon conceptual frameworks for teacher training programs exacerbates the problem. This ambiguity impedes accurate data collection and complicates efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of teacher policies. 📊 Lack of Information and Methodologies: Insufficient data on vital variables like teacher salaries and attrition rates further compounds the issue. Without comprehensive datasets, policymakers struggle to effectively formulate evidence-based strategies to address workforce challenges. 💡 Lack of Clarity and Guidance: The absence of clear definitions and guidance perpetuates confusion and impedes capacity-building initiatives. To drive meaningful progress, we must establish standardised frameworks and provide robust advice to streamline data collection efforts. At GraphoGame, we believe that education technology operators must unite as a global community to address these challenges and pave the way for data-driven solutions. By fostering collaboration, standardising methodologies, and providing clear guidance, we can unlock invaluable insights to propel education systems forward. Let's turn these challenges into opportunities for progress and create a brighter future for #learners worldwide! #educationdata #teachers #teacherdata #transformativechange #globalcollaboration #learningdata #literacyskills #digitallearning #standardisation #graphogame #unesco ✨🌍

Education data is so much more than mere statistics. When produced and used correctly it helps for example teachers to intervene as early as possible and ensure no one drops out. System level data can be produced even on nationwide level to provide key insight for decision making and investments.

New free access article published! In this paper I look at how new kinds of teacher professionalism, expertise and agency are emerging as they get involved in data infrastructuring and become edu-data-systems experts. I argue that teachers are not just either complying with, enacting (or resisting) datafication, but (some) are actively involved in shaping the flow of data power in and through schools, creating opportunities for new forms of professional agency and expertise to emerge. The paper explores how teachers' labour, expertise and agency are changing through processes of datafication, de-professionalising some teachers while other teachers forge new kinds of education-data professionalities. https://lnkd.in/ewRwpB3p

I read this entire article and not once was the college or university library mentioned. Librarians are ideal partners in the implementation of a Digital Media Literacy curriculum. The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education already provides best practices for instruction related to information literacy — which digital media literacy is at its core. Of course this would mean institutions need to put more resources into their libraries. A librarian involved in the development of an asynchronous online digital media literacy module is one thing. But the addition of a new synchronous in-person or online course requirement for all students alongside existing first year course requirements that necessitate one-shot research instruction…would be overwhelming without more library staff to share the workload. Overall, I just want institutions to see, value, and respect professional librarians for the information professionals that we are and include the library in conversations that directly relate to our work and expertise. #HigherEd #AcademicLibraries #DigitalMediaLiteracy #InformationLiteracy #InformationProfessionals #Librarians #MoreThanABuilding #MoreThanBooks
