Really insightful guidance from the panel on AI for businesses, what it is, how to assess the use case and how to establish controls and oversight of AI. Simon
It was a real pleasure to chair our discussion yesterday evening on the commercial use and governance of AI. A big thank you to Jacob Turner, Charles Radclyffe, Alan Baker and Sandra Smythev for being our panel on such an interesting and timely topic. You know it has gone well when you over run slightly and the feedback is that we should have spoken for longer! Thank you to our clients and contacts for attending and in particular Albert de Symons Azis-Clauson 🦚for keeping us on our toes with some very interesting questions.

Building AI to eliminate ESG admin for sustainability departments | CEO EthicsAnswer (Top 5 UK FinTech, TechRound FinTech50 2024)
I really enjoyed the opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences on building a generative AI platform, and hopefully we were able to convince the audience that there really are commercial opportunities for AI - and the risks can be appropriately managed. And kudos to the chap in the audience who quipped that in the same way that Banks need to KYC (know your customer), companies of all sizes and in all industries should think about KY-AI (know your AI). It was a very smart and astute suggestion, that ought to be quite straightforward to implement given there are those in the market now looking at offering exactly these solutions.

Thank you Ted Souder and Elif Oker, MD, FACEP for hosting and masterful facilitation of a topic that is transforming business and the world around us at an unprecedented pace. AI is ingrained in so many software and cloud-based tools, yet many businesses have not framed a strategy for how to apply AI to their business processes, knowledge management, customer engagement, market research, etc. The importance of having policies, governance, securing data assets/intellectual property and strategy for adoption will be critical as the technology will be necessary to keep pace with the market and facilitate competitive advantage.

The Economic Club of Chicago truly lives up to its motto, "We bring powerful minds together," and our latest gathering was no exception. Together with my friend, Elif Oker, MD, FACEP, we hosted a thought-provoking dialogue at the Chicago Club, exploring "What Should Leadership Look Like in the Age of AI?" The evening buzzed with dynamic conversations, embracing diverse perspectives to uncover insights on the AI-driven future's vast potential and challenges. Questions of AI regulation, its impact on education and inequality, and the concept of a "License to AI" were at the forefront. It's these intimate, interactive sessions that underscore the unique value of the ECC. Thanks for joining us: Chris J. As AI continues to advance, the question arises: do we trust AI to summarize our contributions to a panel discussion? My answer: to a certain extent. This viewpoint developed after reviewing an AI-generated summary of my contribution to the panel "Boosting digital collaboration for resilience and sustainability in shipping" held during the UNCTAD eWeek 2023. The panel featured Margi Van Gogh, Wolfgang Lehmacher, Mikael Lind, Teemu Manderbacka, and Andre Simha. The discussion was skillfully moderated by Jan Hoffmann. Diane, you are not only an amazing data specialist and data enthusiast but a fantastic photographer as well. You neatly captured pleasant emotions of students of the Boardroom Analytics class at the right time! Diane is a Senior Director for Marketing and Operations at Seattle University. Her love for data came in handy. Diane, thank you for joining Thursday night sharing the nuances of data and its effective communication with board members to our students who soon will be called business analysts graduating from Seattle University. Thank you David. David Yunger founder and CEO of Vaital AI presented on the challenges higher education is facing for multitude of reasons along with providing solutions that can be generated with the help of AI and Chat GPT. It was insightful learning about the FIVE LEVELS of Generative AI starting from Public G AI to Disruptive Competitive Advantage Al. David's presentation of the Five Levels of AI reminded me Miles and Snow's work on, "Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process" (1978). The authors developed a model where they identified four types of strategic behaviors and supporting organizational characteristics to which they referred to as Prospectors, Analyzers, Defenders, and Reactors with two dimensions. The vertical dimension is called exploitation (low and high) and the horizontal dimension is called exploration (low and high). These dimensions and the four typologies differentiate organizations and their responses to the changing environments. Prospectors are the ones that change the environment as these are high explorers. Professor Charles Snow is describing their Org Model some 14 years. Here is the six minutes video: https://lnkd.in/d2SFGJKR Masters of Business Analytics (MSBA) students thoroughly enjoyed insightful and interactive discussion with David and Diane.

Thursday night, my stars aligned. Who knew when Professor Rubina Mahsud invited me back to her Boardroom Analytics class to present that I would end up meeting a fellow midwesterner and high school theatre/speech team geek— Alumnus David Yunger, CEO of Vaital. This brilliant man and his company stand in the gap between ethical use of AI and making sure AI generated efficiencies are accessible across industries, regardless of company size. David Yunger, I forgot to ask the most important question, though…do you play Euchre?! #GenerativeAI #CuraPersonalis Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University

📢 Join us on Monday, October 9th, at the FairComp workshop during UbiComp/ISWC 2023 for an exciting keynote by Prof. Ricardo Baeza-Yates on Responsible Artificial Intelligence and a discussion on how its practices apply to the UbiComp community. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dCiBE6kR 🙌 Kudos to my co-chairs, Dimitris Spathis, Marios Constantinides, Tong Xia, and Niels van Berkel, for drafting such an exciting program! Abstract: In the first part, to set the stage, we cover irresponsible AI: (1) discrimination (e.g., facial recognition, justice); (2) phrenology (e.g., biometric-based predictions); (3) limitations (e.g., human incompetence, minimal adversarial AI) and (4) indiscriminate use of computing resources (e.g., large language models). These examples do have a personal bias but set the context for the second part, where we address three challenges: (1) principles and governance, (2) regulation, and (3) our cognitive biases. We finish discussing our responsible AI initiatives and the near future.

Today I participated in a panel by invitation from the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority to discuss the EU AI Act and other incoming regulations for the field of AI. Within this discussion I argued: 1️⃣ Norway could take a role in AI beyond compliance, leading responsible development in the ocean industry and AI safety collaborations among industry and academia. 2️⃣ It may be worth considering a Norwegian AI Regulatory Sandbox for the ocean industry. This would be domain specific and may lead to interesting responsible innovation with the necessary data as well as domain expertise. 3️⃣ Industry needs to heavily invest in the research communities and scale up their R&D on AI, and collaborative joint research efforts. What do you think? 💬 Thank you to fellow panelists Torleif Husebø, Nikolai Brøvig as well as the excellent moderation. Great to see others present during the day, with good perspectives from Finn Carlsen, Linn Iren Vestly Bergh, Frank Børre Pedersen, Tom Ryen, Brian Murray, Karianne Tung (online), Elena Parmiggiani, Helga M. Brogger, MD, Gunnar Lille, Rialda Spahić, Andreas Grefsrud, Racin Gudmestad, Henrik Syse. Tagging a few more people: David C., Dr. Nilla Karlsen-Davies, Morten Dalsmo, Morten Dæhlen, Lillian Røstad, Marie Bjerre, Even A. Røed, Martin Willoch Olstad, Linda Hofstad Helleland, Liv Dingsør, Eirik Andreassen, Christine Hafskjold.

"The possibilities are limitless, but the starting point is very clear. We need to build skills, we need to build awareness, and we need to help City Halls begin to understand what's possible, so that they can move forward in a way that makes sense, aligns with civic values and protects the things that they need to protect." James Anderson, Mayor Tim Kelly, and Mayor Andrew Ginther spoke to Sarah Holder for Bloomberg CityLab about how urban leaders can introduce generative AI tools responsibly and effectively at the city level— and how the Mayors Innovation Studio at #CityLab2023 will get cities started.
