The thing about fractious arguments is that no matter who wins, you lose!
MisCommunicator of the Week Award goes to the entire slate of US Republican Presidential candidates, who spent much of the televised second debate bickering and talking over each other in a most unedifying (and somehow pretty boring) spectacle.
As a result, the only true winner was Donald Trump, who didn't even bother to turn up for the debate.
Research suggests that when people watch you in an argument, they pay little attention to the rights & wrongs of the issue, and simply dismiss all sides as 'as bad as each other'.
A plague on both your houses basically.
As part of your approach to communication, it is important to keep this factor in mind. If the argument is important enough to you, by all means get stuck in and try to win on the issue. But accept that whatever happens, you will come out with as much mud on your clothes as the other person.
